Sandy M’s review of Iron Flame (The Empyrean, Book 2) by Rebecca Yarros
Paranormal Romance published by Entangled: Red Tower Books 7 Nov 23

If you read Fourth Wing, the first book in this series, and loved it, thought Rebecca Yarros had outdone herself, you are going to more amazed than ever when you read this next in the series.

And I don’t even know where to start to tell you about it. Sooooooo much happens in this installment, along with betrayal and more loss as Violet and her second-year friends continue their education to become elite dragon riders. After everything Violet has gone through to get to her second year, she now has to deal with a new leader who is out for blood where she’s concerned. She also has a new issue with Xaden and his secretiveness. In this case for quite a while, love is not enough to sustain their relationship.

And the dragons. I love dragons. Tairn and Andarna, Violet’s two dragons – she’s so cool and special she gets two! – are fiercely protective of her, even with Andarna going through her adolescent stage, which gives readers a few fun scenes. Typical teenage bad attitude even in dragons. The fighting scenes are intense and action-packed, with even the dragons having a difficult time when attacks on the school keep coming. Violet and Dain – the best friend she still doesn’t know she can trust – work together to keep the wards protecting everyone up and running. The best part, though, is having the three Sorrengail siblings together, each so different from the other.

Xaden steals my heart in every scene, going from bad-ass warrior to lover, letting Violet know he’s not going anywhere, no matter how angry and hurt she gets from his supposed betrayals. We see both stripped down to their core as they navigate their relationship and their trials in trying to keep the enemy at bay. All the secondary characters we were introduced to in the first book are back here too. The bad-assery isn’t limited to Xaden. Unexpected twists and turns will keep you guessing throughout. Some good and some that will kick you in the chest.

This is just a quick, short (really short!) synopsis of what happens in this story. Do not delay in picking it up and getting started. If you’re new to this series, start at the beginning with Fourth Wing. You need to get to know these characters, including the dragon, from the very start. You will not be disappointed one iota.

Grade: A+

Summary:

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.
