Kaitlyn‘s review of Fourth Wing (Empyrean, Book 1) by Rebecca Yarros
Paranormal Romance published by Entangled Red Tower Books 2 May 23

By chapter four I knew. I just KNEW this was a five star book. Then by halfway I knew this was my new favorite book of all time. Above SJM and everything I’ve read in the last year and a half. 😳 It feels blasphemous to say that and like I’m cheating on Throne of Glass, but it’s true. This is it. This is the one.

I was giddy with excitement while reading this book. Everything about it is so entertaining and engrossing. The plot is just SO cool – woman who’s been told her entire life she’s too sickly and weak is thrown into the last place she ever thought she’d find herself, the military college for the elite dragon riders who protect the nation. The dragon picks the rider, but to even get to that step, you first have to prove your strength and courage. If the other cadets don’t kill you first, then you might just find yourself bbq’ed by a dragon who doesn’t find you worthy.

As if that incredible plot isn’t enough, there’s also enemies to lovers! And let me tell you, Xaden is 🔥. The slow burn is perfect, I knew right away I was going to LOVE their journey. I’m also obsessed with how cunning, courageous, and determined Violet is. And the best friends she made along the way are just as great.

I’m so glad I buddy read this with @vblacey.books and @magically.kate. I would have burst from the excitement had I not been able to fangirl over this book with them the entire time. We literally asked each other over and over “Are we just giving in to the hype or is this really the greatest book ever?” Spoiler alert, it’s the second one.

If I ever convince you to read a book, make it this one. This book is the most epic adventure with the coolest plot ever. And Book 2 has already been announced and releases in November. I can’t wait!

Grade: A+

Summary:

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
