Sandy M’s review of The Choice (Dragon Heart Legacy, Book 3) by Nora Roberts
Paranormal Romance published by St. Martin’s Press 22 Nov 22

For the final time we visit Talamh and all the beloved characters we’ve met there in Nora Roberts’ Dragon Heart Legacy trilogy. While it is a place of magicks, friendship, and love, there is an old evil that is still gunning for Breen, an evil that knows she’s the key to bringing devastation and annihilation to this beautiful place. But Breen and her love, Keegan, along with all others from elves to trolls, work tirelessly to cling to their way of life.

Keeping Keegan and Breen busy lately are the hidden portals into Talamh they’ve just discovered. So in between Breen’s practicing her magicks and warfare, Marco’s wonderfully cooked meals, dragon rides, and festival planning, everyone is working to end the evil trying to destroy them for so long. There’s also lots of laughter – Keegan’s response to an ancestor’s love life is a great scene – and joy when it comes to their young.

Which is why the best part of this story for me – alongside the love between Keegan and Breen – is the dragons. Every rider has a special bond with their dragon, including Marco’s love, Brian, as well as Keegan and Breen. When the dragons face attack, those scenes go from horrifying to so very emotional in a heartbeat. By the end of it all, I was misty eyed. Heart breaking it all is, but wonderfully written, of course, by Ms. Roberts.

When Breen finally makes her choice to keep all safe, Keegan’s heart, as well as the reader’s, drops, and he and others who love Breen – which is everyone for miles – rush to intervene. Marg, Breen’s grandmother, also gets her vengeance for another heart-wrenching part of the story. And you can’t help but love Bollocks the Brave throughout the book. Then Breen herself shines as she realizes exactly what needs to be done to rid Talamh of the dark magicks that has been coming at them for an eternity.

My only nitpick – and that doesn’t happen often with a Nora Roberts book – is the epilogue. While it is a good scene, I’d have preferred to see what these characters would have been up to however many years down the road after they’ve taken their freedom back. But even that can’t detract from the fantastic story this is. As usual, I hate to see the end of such a fun and emotional trilogy, but seeing what Ms. Roberts has up her sleeve next is exciting and I can’t wait.

Grade: A+

Summary:

Talamh is a land of green hills, high mountains, deep forests, and seas, where magicks thrive. But portals allow for passage in and out—and ultimately, each must choose their place, and choose between good and evil, war and peace, life and death…

Breen Siobhan Kelly grew up in the world of Man and was once unaware of her true nature. Now she is in Talamh, trying to heal after a terrible battle and heartbreaking losses. Her grandfather, the dark god Odran, has been defeated in his attempt to rule over Talamh, and over Breen—for now.

With the enemy cast out and the portal sealed, this is a time to rest and to prepare. Breen spreads her wings and realizes a power she’s never experienced before. It’s also a time for celebrations—of her first Christmas in both Talamh and Ireland, of solstice and weddings and births—and daring to find joy again in the wake of sorrow. She rededicates herself to writing her stories, and when his duties as taoiseach permit, she is together with Keegan, who has trained her as a warrior and whom she has grown to love.

It’s Keegan who’s at her side when the enemy’s witches, traitorous and power-mad, appear to her in her sleep, practicing black magick, sacrificing the innocent, and plotting a brutal destruction for Breen. And soon, united with him and with all of Talamh, she will seek out those in desperate need of rescue, and confront the darkness with every weapon she has: her sword, her magicks—and her courage…
