Kaitlyn‘s review of The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
Contemporary Romance published by Gallery Books 18 May 21

Love isn’t a strong enough word to describe my feelings for this book. I greedily consumed this in one sitting. It’s superb. This book makes me want to completely abandon my dissertation analyzing glycosylation in cancer and switch to developing a matchmaking algorithm for genetic compatibility. Is it too late? Can I do this instead?

River is perfect, the total package, an absolute dream guy. A handsome, broody geneticist – where can I find one?!  And Jess, the hard-working statistician single mom, I absolutely adore her. Don’t even get me started on her curious, book-loving kid Juno. Coming home from the library every week with a new nonfiction book, spouting facts about giraffe vertebrae, what an awesome child. Can’t forget the romance writer bff who made me laugh out loud multiple times. Then, as if there weren’t enough lovable characters, Ms. Lauren also throws in Nana Jo and Pops. My heart!

This might be my new favorite stem romance. It was funny, cute, binge-able, and managed to slip in sequencing and gene families. I can’t recommend this book enough. You know what I loved most about it? River and Jess talked when they needed to (for the most part) like grown-ass adults! The miscommunication trope was, basically, nonexistent! Groundbreaking. Truly revolutionary. 10/10. Seriously, if you’ve been putting off reading The Soulmate Equation, this is your sign to pick it up immediately!

Grade: A+

Summary:

Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. After all, her father was never around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn’t “father material” before her daughter was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close but working constantly to stay afloat is hard…and lonely.

But then Jess hears about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that’s predicted to change dating forever. Finding a soulmate through DNA? The reliability of numbers: This Jess understands.

At least she thought she did, until her test shows an unheard-of 98 percent compatibility with another subject in the database: GeneticAlly’s founder, Dr. River Peña. This is one number she can’t wrap her head around, because she already knows Dr. Peña. The stuck-up, stubborn man is without a doubt not her soulmate. But GeneticAlly has a proposition: Get ‘to know him and we’ll pay you. Jess—who is barely making ends meet—is in no position to turn it down, despite her skepticism about the project and her dislike for River. As the pair are dragged from one event to the next as the “Diamond” pairing that could launch GeneticAlly’s valuation sky-high, Jess begins to realize that there might be more to the scientist—and the science behind a soulmate—than she thought.
