Evelyn’s review of The Immortal (Rise of the Warlords, Book 2) by Gena Showalter
Paranormal Romance published by HQN Books 01 Feb 22

Groundhog Day with a sinister twist, along with Gods, immortals, mythical creatures, and magical powers…I call that one heck of a good time! This book is about a group of immortals known as Astras. They are in the middle of war games for – shocking – more power. Add in a harpy nymph on her own quest for power and things get really interesting.

The Astras are an elite group of men who are trained to take care of each other at all costs. They are constantly tried and tested by the Gods with enticing prizes and promises of hard and horrible punishments.

The main male character is Halo. He is a typical Alpha male who has been forged from childhood by abuse and trauma. He is strong, calculating, and an ice-cold killing machine.

His counterpart is Ophelia, a harpy nymph who is run by her emotions, also with a traumatic past, family issues, severe insecurities, and a point to prove. She is funny, puny, and constantly looking for her in. When their paths cross, the ice starts to thaw because together they are heat, chemistry, and attitude.

Throughout the story the main characters are reliving the same day over and over again, with twists and turns that challenge their values and core beliefs, and that inadvertently throws these characters into a love that defies even the Gods. I love the details, backgrounds that are laid out, and a believable romance that captured all of my attention. Books like this keep me up at night, because I cannot put them down.

Ms. Showalter is amazing! The description and care she took in creating all of her characters is so captivating and refreshing. I love the details, not just with the pasts of both of the main characters but in the entire backdrop. The balance of story line and sexual encounters are perfect, nothing is compromised. The author has me hooked and now I cannot wait to read more of her work.

Grade: A

Summary:

Halo Phaninon, assassin of gods, is as cold and merciless as a machine. For victory, he crosses any line. When tasked to kill twelve of mythology’s fiercest monsters in twenty-four hours, Halo eagerly accepts. Except, each morning he awakens to the same day, forced to relive new horrors. Only one other person retains their memory—the beauty who threatens his iron control.

Ophelia the Flunk Out hates her disaster of a life. She’s the family disappointment, a harpy warrior without a kill and powerless—or is she? Nearly every night she’s doomed to repeat her own murder, but each morning she arises to spar with Halo, the ruthless warlord increasingly determined to save her…and lure her to his bed.

Halo’s insatiable desire for the stubborn Ophelia drives him wild…and he only craves more. If he remains in the time loop, they stay together. But if he escapes, they lose each other forever.
