Sandy M’s review of Angel Flight (Flygirl, Book 2) by R.D. Kardon
Women’s Fiction published by Acorn Publishing 8 Sep 20

Just like the cover of the first book in this series, Flygirl, this one called to me too. I want to know what happens to the flygirl. This time around, Ms. Kardon took me totally by surprise with the direction of this book. It’s nothing even close to what I thought it would be, especially considering the title.

Our heroine, Tris, has finally made captain at Westin Charter and is currently training her first officer to captain his own plane. Things are going quite well in this regard, especially when the company gets the call for an Angel Flight for a terminally ill patient whose husband is hoping for a miracle. Then life is looking more promising when she meets Mike, another pilot. She’s not moved on since the death of her lover three years before, so maybe Mike is just what she needs. She has her secrets just as Mike has his. Tris is seeing a counselor after her horrendous time with her former employer/co-workers, whom we meet in the first book. She also still has Danny, her best friend, in her life, though he’d always wanted to take their relationship to the next level; however, he’s married now.

Tris has been promised the promotion to Pilot in Command, but things start to crack when Bruce, her trainee, begins to exhibit behavior while in the left seat that he’s never shown before. Then she’s warned about Mike – and his ex-wife, whom he’s never mentioned to Tris during their growing feelings with one another. On top of that, she has to deal with a couple of the jerks from Tetrix, though they do treat her better now that she’s not working with/for them any longer. Tris loses her promotion to the one person she thought she could trust; she has to backtrack her recommendation of her first officer; and then things really blow up in the middle of their Angel Flight.

The last quarter of this book kept surprising me at every turn. Ms. Kardon hides all those surprises quite well until it’s time for each reveal. I enjoyed the relationship between Tris and Mike, and that revelation about him and the subsequent actions that throw everything into turmoil bowled me over. At this point I have no idea where Tris’ life will go from here – where her flying will take her next and which man will end up with her love and loyalty. I was a bit confused at the end of this book, not sure if that is The End or if another book is planned. I’m happy to say I found out today another book is in the works, so we definitely shall find out where Tris goes from here.

The flying/airplane aspects of the story are done very well, and I enjoyed learning it all from a woman’s point of view. They say an author should write what they know, and Ms. Kardon is doing an excellent job of that so far.

Grade: A

Summary:

Two determined women. The men they love. One desperate plan.

Pilot Tris Miles is finally getting the recognition she deserves. She is a trusted captain and confidante to her boss at Westin Charter Company, and mentor to her young, ambitious co-pilot Bruce. Tris is offered a coveted promotion and the opportunity of a lifetime—to fly a prestigious “angel flight,” transporting a critically ill woman from a remote town in northern Canada to the US for medical treatment.

But Tris needs more than professional success. Still alone almost three years after her lover Bron’s death, Tris meets Mike, a local pilot with a secret past he refuses to discuss. Their budding relationship stumbles when Mike gets hired by Westin Charter to compete for the promotion Tris was promised.

As Tris & Mike’s professional battle intensifies, their personal relationship deepens. Life is getting a whole lot more complicated for Tris, and it’s about to get worse as the angel flight embarks. No one could imagine what awaits them in Canada, and how each will have to fight for their lives on this mission of mercy.
