Sandy M’s review of Indigo Ridge (Edens, Book 1) by Devney Perry
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 26 Oct 21
Every time I read a Devney Perry book, I thank the heavens she puts an end to my struggle finding my next book to read. For some reason, that’s been a big issue for me lately, but Ms. Perry is consistent in her stories, no matter what, and I always pick up her new release as soon as I can. I’m super happy in this case with the beginning of a new series, so I should have some wonderful stories in my future for quite some time.
I find the longer I read romance, the less I like being strung along in most cases when it comes to the hero and heroine hitting the sheets. It’s okay to keep the anticipation going a bit, but when it takes more than half a book to get to that point, I’m usually bored and ready to move on. So when I get a book that gives sizzling sheets right off the bat, I’m a happy reader. In this case, Winn and Griffin have no idea who the other really is, and they spend one hell of a satisfying night together – thinking that will be the end of it, each for their own reasons. Of course, when they meet up again, surprise doesn’t cut it, especially when they learn each other’s identity. I so loved this explosive beginning!
Winn is considered an outsider in Quincy, Montana, despite the fact she visited often as a child. She’s moved to town as the new Chief of Police and granddaughter of the Mayor. She’s determined to make her own mark, however, even with all the cold shoulders from some of her officers. Griffin is part of the premier family of Quincy, having taken over the ranch from his father. All the Eden siblings have come into their own and I enjoyed getting to know them throughout this book. I love a good family story and the Edens are going to deliver in that respect big time.
When there’s a death at Indigo Ridge, old memories for townsfolk are invoked. However, as far as Winn is concerned, those memories aren’t exactly what they should be and she’s determined to go on with her investigation in the face of adversity – some even coming from Griffin as they continue their fling that is fast becoming so much more. As much as they both want to go their separate ways, there’s something between them that can’t be denied, no matter how hard they try. I like that their sizzle never wanes and they’re giving the relationship a chance, even if they don’t realize that’s what they’re doing in the beginning.
As Winn’s investigation grows ever more dangerous, readers are kept guessing right up to the big reveal, and it is a surprise out of left field. Usually I don’t care for “I love you” to be tossed out in the face of danger/injury/whatever, but in this case it works for them because no one saw the danger coming. We get so much more than that anyway when Griff comes to the rescue.
This is a great start to the series, and Griff’s brother Knox is up next in Juniper Hill, out in January. In the meantime, in time for Christmas and because I forgot (I still can’t believe that!), Christmas in Quincy is up next for me for a nice holiday read. If you’ve not read any Devney Perry, you’re missing out. That includes her Willa Nash books. Get with it!
Summary:
Winslow Covington believes in life, liberty and the letter of the law. As Quincy, Montana’s new chief of police, she’s determined to prove herself to the community and show them she didn’t earn her position because her grandfather is the mayor.
According to her pops, all she has to do is earn favor with the Edens. But winning over the town’s founding family might have been easier if not for her one-night stand with their oldest son. In her defense, it was her first night in town and she didn’t realize that the rugged and charming man who wooed her into bed was Quincy royalty.
Sleeping with Griffin Eden was a huge mistake, one she’s trying to forget. He’s insufferable, arrogant and keeps reminding everyone that she’s an outsider. Winslow does her best to avoid Griffin, but when a woman is found dead on Eden property, the two of them have no choice but to cross paths.
As clues to the murderer lead to one of Quincy’s own, Griffin realizes Winslow is more than he gave her credit for. Beautiful and intelligent, she proves hard to resist. For him. And the killer.
