Sandy M’s review of The Bluff (Calamity, Montana, Book 2) by Willa Nash
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 04 Feb 21
I’m very happy to be back in Calamity, Montana. Small-town America where everyone knows everyone and their business. Hux and Everly are two loners who’ve had enough and just want to live their lives quietly and simply. Thus, when they unexpectedly meet up in a local bar, when their chemistry explodes off the chart, they go with the flow for one night. Too bad fate and emotions have to always get in the way and lead them where they don’t want to go.
Hux is an ex-con, a father who wants to get to know his daughter, whom his evil ex uses against him to keep the townsfolk suspicious of him, and a sexy artist who pulls in big bucks for his paintings. Everly came to Calamity to start over after giving up on a singing career in Nashville that wasn’t going anywhere. She then went though an unspeakable event with Savannah, Hux’s daughter, and now she’s always looking over her shoulder for the axe to drop again. Hux wants more time with Savannah, but the court always rules against him. What he needs is a wife to help on that score. Everly happens to overhear his conversation with his lawyer the day after their hot night together and offers her services. Neither of them is looking for a relationship, so why not? It could work.
In fact, it does work and Hux is awarded the time he’s longed for with Savannah. She needs her father, because she’s not happy at home with her mother and stepfather, causing her to act out and get into trouble all the time. Navigating two complicated relationships keeps Hux on his toes. Everly begins working in Hux’s gallery, needing the focus she’s been lacking for a while. These two bring out the best in each other. Everly finds herself again, her confidence to move forward. Hux learns how to open himself up again, leaving the ex-con behind. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes when his ex finally gets a bit of her own medicine.
This story is a bit more emotional than the first book. Hux and Savannah love each other so much and being kept apart is taxing for both of them. The growing love between Everly and Hux is wonderful to watch as it blossoms when neither of them is looking. Everly has so much love to give and Hux is in need of all that love. Another wonderful time in Calamity, and I can’t wait until The Brazen hits the shelves in July.
Summary:
As Calamity’s newest resident, Everly Christian thought life in small-town Montana would be dull and tame—and she needs a little mundane after the last few chaotic years. But one night, boredom drives her to the local bar, where she finds herself sitting beside a handsome and mysterious artist.
The man is anything but dull and tame, especially in the bedroom, and when she steps out of his shower and overhears his conversation, life gets interesting again.
Reese Huxley needs a wife.
And why shouldn’t Everly be the bride?
She’s got her reasons for agreeing to the hasty nuptials—reasons she’s keeping to herself. As long as she can stop herself from falling in love with her husband, she’ll make it out of this sham marriage in one piece. But Everly has a weakness for wayward men, and the more Hux pushes her away, the more she realizes this bluff is anything but a lie.
