Veena’s review of Flame (Dark Kings, Book 17) by Donna Grant
Paranormal Romance published by St Martin’s Press 30 Jun 20

War between the Fae, both light and dark, the others and the dragon kings seems inevitable.  Do the Kings question their decision to protect the humans and banish their dragons? Read this pivotal book in the series to find out what’s what.  Of course, the fact that Noreen and Cain find love along the way is the cherry on top.

Noreen is a part of the Others. She’s become increasingly uncomfortable about what her group is planning, so she reaches out anonymously to warn the Kings. Cain is dispatched to determine Noreen’s motives and find out what she wants to tell them.  In order to protect Noreen, he takes her to the devastated and abandoned Fae realm to hide her away from the reach of the Others.  Imagine their surprise when they find that a large part of the realm has been healing. Who or what is responsible?

The power of healing in the Fae realm is having a strange effect on Noreen. Her bound and altered memories are released to devastating effect. Between the Kings, the reapers, and all the other usual suspects from the series, the story weaves through myriad twists and turns and blind corners, making it one of the more exciting books in the series for a while.

So many questions from the past are answered and, of course, new threads offer tantalizing glimpses and intriguing possibilities for future books.  Con has always had a strong supporting role in this series, but this one really takes the time to look beneath his smooth, urbane interior into the tortured, pained man underneath. I know the author is setting the stage for his book and I, for one, absolutely can’t wait to see how it all works out for the King of the Dragons.

While Ms. Grant continues the Reaper series as its own series, the characters have become so strongly meshed with the dragons, and it’s hard to separate where one ends and the other begins, particularly with the role they play in this book. Anyhow, can’t wait to see how the author will evolve this series and where she’ll take it next.

Grade: A

Summary:

If she believed in destiny, she would believe they were meant for each other.
But that fire was put out long ago. . .

Living among the Dragon Kings, Cain has spent lifetimes learning to distrust both mortals and Fae. He is a warrior born—and every instinct demands that he fight to keep his own kind safe. But when a fringe member of the Dark Fae contacts the Kings with an urgent warning, Cain is torn for the first time. How can he trust this beautiful creature when resisting his primal attraction to her is battle enough?

Noreen is horrified by what her kind and the malevolent Others are planning for the Dragon Kings. Dark Fae or not, there are lines she will not cross—even if it means risking her life. But she never imagined that she would risk her heart until she meets Cain. She wants him with a soul-deep desire that frightens her…and endangers them both. Is saying goodbye to everything Noreen has ever known worth a love that will span time and realms?
