Sandy M’s review of Forsaken Trail (Runaway, Book 4) by Devney Perry
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 29 Dec 20

We are on the road again in Devney Perry’s Runaway series, this time headed to Arizona where Aria Saint-James is delivering the newly revamped cherry red Cadillac, which was used as a  home years ago when they lived in a junkyard with other friends in California, to her twin, Clara. Little does Aria know her life is about to change when she once again comes face to face with the man her sister calls friend and she calls enemy.

I’m not usually a fan of enemies-to-lovers romance, but in the hands of an author whose every book I’ve enjoyed so far, I had little doubt this story wouldn’t work for me. When it comes to Ms. Perry’s books, I was right. Since we’ve met them in this series, Aria and Brody have rubbed each other the wrong way every minute they are together. After the way they grew up, Aria is the sister who is always in protective mode, snarky and sassy to keep the emotions at bay. Her life has been so very different from that of the handsome and wealthy Brody.

But what Aria doesn’t know is Brody didn’t always have it easy either. So when Clara is too ill to attend a wedding with Brody – his sister’s nuptials and that’s a selfish, horrible story in itself – Aria finds herself volunteered to go along instead. Those scenes at the wedding when Aria doesn’t take any guff whatsoever from Brody’s arrogant family are such fun. Snark and sass has rarely been done better in the pages of a romance. And this is where the relationship between Brody and Aria begins to go through some subtle changes – until big changes require a lot more from both of them.

The biggest change is after their one night together (yes, some champagne was involved!) when Aria discovers she’s pregnant. Thus begins the emotional ride when you can’t hide behind certain feelings anymore. You have to face everything head on, go with the flow, and learn the line between love and hate is as thin as it’s always been said. Brody insists Aria live with him during the pregnancy. He’s definitely going to be involved in his child’s life, no two ways about it. So that love-hate thing? Everything is about to get really interesting.

This is a fun series to read. So if you haven’t started it yet, you should. The next trip is Clara’s, taking the Caddy to California to find Karson, the one who held all those kids together at the junkyard during the scariest and one of the best times of their lives. It’s the last book in the series, which I’ll hate to see end, but that only opens the door for something brand new from Devney Perry. I’m definitely looking forward to that.

Grade: A

Summary:

Aria Saint-James has planned the perfect getaway: sweatpants, takeout and two weeks alone with her sister and nephew. Nowhere on that list is wearing a low-cut dress and uncomfortable heels to attend a wedding where she knows neither the bride nor the groom. Toss in her nemesis, Brody Carmichael, and her road trip to Arizona is officially a bust.

But at least there is champagne.

She blames the bubbly for falling into bed with Brody that night. Enemy or no, the billionaire is irresistible in a tux. But after their one-night tryst, Aria has no choice but to cut her vacation short, returning home to escape his devilish smile, vowing never to see Brody again.

Except Aria gets a surprise a few weeks later—she’s pregnant. When he learns that she’s carrying his child, Brody offers Aria the chance of a lifetime. The catch? She has to live under his roof until the baby is born.

Either they’ll kill each other in nine months. Or discover love buried beneath their hate.
