Sandy M’s review of The Bribe (Calamity, Montana, Book 1) by Willa Nash
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 15 Oct 20

This is Devney Perry’s foray into romantic suspense with a new and shiny pseudonym, and I  knew I would love it when I initially I read about this debut book in the Calamity, Montana series. I’m happy to say I was so very right. From first crazy meeting to learning about all secrets that will slowly and eventually come along, this story has it all, especially an alpha and compassionate hero who goes after what he wants.

What Duke Evans, the local sheriff, wants is Lucy Ross, though he doesn’t find out she’s a mega superstar from Nashville until much later – she gives him a fake name when they originally meet, neither one, despite their instant attraction, believing they’d ever see the other again. But when Lucy makes it to Calamity, where she’s hoping to hide out and where no one knows her name, she’s there to de-stress and relax. Being a famous country singer isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. So to keep her anonymity, Lucy takes an illegal step and offers the sheriff a bribe.

Duke lets her believe he’s going to take that bribe, if it gets him closer to figuring out what makes the woman tick and why she’s hiding. Of course, he has to do all that amid the chemistry zinging back and forth between them. In true romantic style, Ms. Nash gives readers the perfect couple to fall in love with as they discover their own love together. Duke is the first to acknowledge the feelings growing between them, all the while keeping her secrets and keeping her safe from danger that seemingly appears out of nowhere. It takes Lucy a bit longer to ‘fess up due to her experiences with gold diggers and others who want to control her and her career.

The Bribe is a terrific start to a series that I hope has a number of books in it. I’m really looking forward to The Bluff, which releases in February. We meet the hero of that story in this book and he is one fascinating and interesting character, and I look forward to digging into his secrets and vulnerabilities. If you’ve not read either Devney Perry or now Willa Nash, get with it! You will not be disappointed one bit, especially if you start with Ms. Perry’s Maysen Jar series as I did. A wonderful introduction to her writing, and you will be a fan in no time.

Grade: A

Summary:

Duke Evans didn’t expect to find a beautiful woman in a staring contest with a bison on his favorite hiking trail. He also didn’t expect to see her again after rescuing her from the surly beast. As the sheriff in Calamity, Montana, he’s had his fair share of surprises but none as pleasant as pulling over a shiny black car and finding his mysterious hiking companion behind the wheel.

Only she lied to Duke. She gave him a name as fake as her hair color. According to her driver’s license, her real name is Lucy Ross, the famous country music singer whose sudden disappearance has been a hot topic on the radio over the past two weeks.

He’s not sure why Lucy lied about her identity or why she’s in Calamity. And she’s not talking. Instead, she offers him a bribe to keep her secret.

Duke doesn’t want her money. He wants to know why this beautiful woman is on the run. And as long as the star shines on his badge, he’s going to find out.
