Sandy M’s review of The Billionaire’s Fake Wife (Big Bad Billionaires, Book 1) by L. Steele
Contemporary Romance published by 13 Suns 18 Jul 20

I’m usually one who loves an arrogant, tortured hero. In this case, however, said hero is also a jerk with a capital J. Right from the start. The heroine calls it like it is, and at first I thought she’d be worth the read. As I got to know her, though, things just didn’t mesh with what I was learning about her. But I kept reading despite all this, wondering if the author would be able to pull out a good grovel and turn the characters around.

Unfortunately, that never happened. Sinclair is one of seven men in business together, making gobs of money, all brought together because of “the incident” they went through in their younger years. That’s another reason I kept reading – to find out what this incident was and if it’s enough to give Sin a pass when it comes to his behavior. He treats Summer horribly from their first meeting, which is set up by him because he has an agenda and will use whoever to get to his end game, and “the incident” is lacking when it comes to the attitudes that don’t change until nearly the very last page, which is far too long. That’s very irritating and tiring.

Summer is looking for work, needing the money to help pay for her sister’s medical bills. So when she receives an email for an interview with a large, successful company, she’s all in. Of course, she’s surprised to find her potential boss is none other than the jerk from the night before. Not surprising is his attitude is even worse than that initial encounter. And it gets worse as the story goes along and she entertains his proposal of acting as his wife for a month with a big payoff.

In between all of this there is attraction which is taken to crazy levels, especially due to the fact they each can’t seem to stand to be in the same room together three-quarters of the time. Sin keeps throwing in stunts that should make any woman run as far and as fast as she can – having sex with someone else when he knows Summer will be walking in on the act (I should have DNF’d the dang book right there. Silly me.) and other crappy things, all the while he can’t figure out why he does uncharacteristic – think softer, slightly romantic – things when it comes to Summer. Then there’s the fact that she’s only 21, and her actions at times are of a woman much older. Her concern for her sibling is commendable, but not enough to make her any more likable than Sin is when he tries to make himself change and then throws in all in the wind because he’d be changing for a female.

The other men in the series are pretty much the same, going through the same “incident,” making them all jerks at this point. I would imagine there’s even more added on top of that, by the titles of the next books in the series. They don’t need any more secrets or whatever added to the mix. Also, the writing leaves a bit to be desired. There’s not much difference in the way Sin and Summer think/talk, all the men spread their stances, making the scenes sound the same throughout. The sex is fine, but I was to the point that I really didn’t care much after all the crappiness that happened.

Just not a book or a series I can recommend.

Summary:

I never should have agreed to becoming his fake wife…

Sinclair Amadeus Sterling aka
Mr. Superior Jackass with a God complex.
Who also happens to be my blackmailer… gulp.
Tall, dark, gazzilionaire growly pants.
The first time I met him, I kneed him in his very well endowed balls, don’t ask!
He had that tightly leashed, controlling air and a smoldering glare that made me damp in seconds.
The only thing that sucks worse than his attitude is his (lack of) sense of humor! Honest.
Sadly, he’s also the one who could save my business from going bust. Hell!
So when he offers me the chance to work with him, I can hardly refuse, right?
Only catch? I need to be his pretend wife for hold-your-breath, thirty days.
I should have turned and run right then, but…
He has the connections to help my sister’s failing health, not to mention the money to wipe away my debt.
And yeah that… sneaky video recording of him getting me off. OMG!
Besides, it’s only thirty days, right?
It’s not like I’m in danger of falling in love with London’s most notorious bachelor.
Then he tells me the real reason for the charade.
And everything changes…
