Sandy M’s review of Rifts & Refrains (Hush Note, Book 2) by Devney Perry
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 29 Sep 20

Because Devney Perry has become a favorite author for me within this past year, when I saw this new release from her, I just dived right in without reading a blurb or any further research. I knew I’d like it. What I didn’t find out until well into reading is that this is the second book in a series by multiple authors. Really, that’s neither here nor there, but if you’re one of those who likes to read in order, it’s just a bit of a warning. I, however, don’t care, because, as usual, Ms. Perry delivers a wonderful story of second chances for all characters involved, especially after all the rifts they’ve experienced in their lives.

Quinn Montgomery has been living her dream of being a chart-topping rock star. She’s the drummer for the wildly popular group Hush Note. Her fame, however, has come at a price – leaving her family and heart behind in Montana ten years ago. Only her Grandma Nan kept in touch on a regular basis, and now Quinn has returned home to put her grandmother to rest and to face her past. There are so many levels to that past, that to get through them is heart-wrenching with every scene, from her parents to her siblings to her first love, Graham. Though she was the one to walk away at eighteen, after a horrible fight with her folks, none of those she loves, aside from Nan, kept in touch either. This is a family that needs loving repair like no other.

The boy she left behind has become a man she knows she has to leave again after the funeral. Graham was her best friend first and then the love of her life, even after he dropped her off at the airport all those years ago. He now has a son who he has to put first, and he also lives within the heart of her family, living next door to them for so long. He knows she’s going to walk away again as their time together winds down – his love for her has never died. But his understanding of the entire situation is from a different point of view now, and letting go is the right thing to do, despite the heartbreak that will most definitely happen again.

Slowly all the rifts for these characters are wonderfully mended as they navigate a new normal for them all. Those scenes will stay with you for quite some time, especially the ones between Colin, Graham’s son, and Quinn – as well as those between father and son. The love between Graham and Quinn can be felt with every look, touch, sigh, and shudder. I like seeing the maturity each of them now possesses to work things out, instead of the troublesome shallowness of youth that kept them apart longer than necessary.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I already have the first book, Lies & Lullabies, by Sarina Bowen in my iBooks and can’t wait to get to it. Muses & Melodies, Book 3 by Rebecca Yarros, is due out soon. This is a trilogy you don’t want to miss. I can confidently say that, even though I’ve read only this second book so far.

Grade: A

Summary:

From the moment Quinn Montgomery sat behind her first snare and cymbal set, she was destined for fame and glory. As Hush Note’s infamous female drummer, she sets the rhythm for the band’s chart-toppings hits. When people tap their feet to their music, it’s to her pulse.

Quinn is content to live in a world away from her family and the cage of her youth. Her only regret is leaving Graham Hayes behind without a goodbye. No matter how many sold-out stadiums she plays, no matter how many crowds sing her songs, his voice haunts her when the music stops.

When a family tragedy forces her to return home to Montana, she plans to leave the second she’s paid her respects. But seeing Graham again turns her life upside down. As a boy, he wasn’t able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future.

If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.
