Sandy M’s review of Runaway Road (Runaway, Book 1) by Devney Perry
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 6 Mar 20
I discovered Devney Perry about a year ago when I ran across her Maysen Jar series just by chance. I’m so very happy that happened, because Ms. Perry and her stories are now on my favorites list. I anxiously awaited this new series, and instantly fell in love with Londyn and Brooks, something that is not so difficult to do when it comes to such wonderful writing.
Londyn McCormack ran away from home when she was 16, desperate to get away from her drug-addicted parents. The other street urchins she fell in with felt more like family than hers ever did. Now, years later, she’s on the run again, this time from a marriage that wasn’t anything like she thought. Taking the one thing from her youth – a remodeled Cadillac convertible – she leaves Boston for California to deliver the car to the friend who took care of her when she needed it most. Fate intervenes when she gets a flat tire just outside Summers, West Virginia.
It’s there she meets Brooks Cohen, mechanic and tow truck driver, and where she finds the way of life she longed for but never thought she’d experience. Small-town America is always a wonderful backdrop for any story, and the folks of Summers help make it so in this case. Brooks is an all-around good guy, having lived a life so very different from Londyn’s. He’s taken with her spirit and independence and wishes they had more time together – something that is granted when unexplained vandalism hits, causing Londyn to spend more time in Summers. That mystery doesn’t go how you’d think, a surprising twist with a heart-warming solution.
These two are so natural together, their banter fun and sexy, leading their attraction into a slow-burning love that turns the reader into mush as their love blossoms and grows. Even then, will Londyn be able to give up her wanderlust ways to stay in one place and to trust as she’s never done before? As wonderful as Brooks is, the scene where he watches that cherry red Caddy drive into the proverbial sunset will clench your heart. Maybe it’s not meant to be after all? Sometimes you wonder how an author will make everything come together for that happily ever after.
The next book in the series, Wild Highway, Londyn’s best friend Gemma’s story, hits the shelves in June. Thank goodness that’s not all that far off. I am waiting for that book just as anxiously as I waited for this one.
Summary:
Londyn McCormack didn’t have a typical childhood. She ran away from home at sixteen, escaping parents more interested in drugs than their daughter. She doesn’t have loving siblings or an adorable pet. Her only family is the five other runaway kids who shared her junkyard home.
Life pulled them all in separate directions, taking her to Boston. For a short time, she thought she’d found something permanent. But after a devastating divorce, she’s running away again, this time to find a lost friend.
She’s driving across the country in her convertible. As a teenager, the rusty car was her shelter. As an adult, it’s her ride to freedom.Except one flat tire derails her trip. Her life collides with Brooks Cohen. They walked away from the first crash. The second might destroy them both.
