Sandy M’s review of Unbroken (Loveless, Texas, Book 1) by Jay Crownover
Contemporary Romance published by Forever Yours 14 May 19
I began with the second book in this series, not realizing it is a series. I loved Case Lawton, brother to our hero here, Crew. Loved the heroine, Aspen, too, but Jay Crownover knows how to write hot, sexy, and tormented cowboys. So the heroes make this series for me.
Crew is definitely tormented. He’s a rodeo star, makes bookoo bucks, but his downfall is his gambling addiction. The man knows he’s about to lose everything, but he can’t stop. Even when he’s in the hands of the scum who keeps Crew on a tight leash when it comes to the money he owes, Crew will more than likely fall again and again. But his salvation is on the horizon.
While he’s done a few promotions for companies over the years, he’s really in need of the one offered by Della Devaux. She has a specific vision for her new line in the family business, and Crew isn’t it. It’s her father, who’s still in charge, who chose Crew. I love the scene where Della is in the stands at a rodeo to watch Crew ride. Makes it so clear these two are total opposites in every way. But Crew needs the money to finally pay off his debt and keep his family safe, now that his rodeo days are over.
I love seeing Crew through others’ eyes. As he bucks up and does what Della wants, the charisma and sexiness can’t be hidden – as Della soon discovers herself. Making him into someone he’s not is a lesson learned, and the man who emerges still has his flaws, but now he’s got the goal of doing whatever he can to make Della happy and his. That makes him sexier than ever, all while he does his best to keep himself and his addiction in check.
There are twists and turns, action-packed and emotional. that I didn’t expect. The lovin’ between Crew and Della is smokin’, especially when Della experiences her first wild and nasty romp in the bedroom. I really enjoy the family dynamic of the Lawton siblings. Next up is Kody, the only girl, and Hill Gamble, who we met in Justified, and, boy howdy, do those two combust whenever they’re around each other. I’m really looking forward to Unforgiven, which will release in February next year.
Summary:
When rodeo star Crew Lawton loses everything in a bad bet, he has no choice but to take a new job to pay off his debts – even if it means becoming the face of an expensive male skincare line. Crew is used to getting sweaty and rustling in the dirt, not posing for photo shoots. And he’s certainly not used to being bossed around by a woman who doesn’t even know the difference between bulls and broncs. But Crew owes money to dangerous criminals, and he’ll do anything Della says in order to pay them back and keep them far away from his family in Loveless, Texas…
The launch of her new men’s line for her family’s company means everything to Della Deveaux, and she’s not willing to let some rugged, arrogant cowboy ruin her campaign. Crew Lawton is the last man she would have chosen to represent her chic, sophisticated brand. Unfortunately, her father already invested millions in Crew’s stupidly handsome face. Yet the more time they spend together, Della and Crew realize that opposites do attract. But when the time comes for Crew to face his past mistakes, will he be able to protect his family…and the woman he’s come to love?
