Veena’s review of Not Always A Saint (Lost Lords, Book 7) by Mary Jo Putney
Historical Romance published by Zebra 25 Aug 15

It’s a refreshing change of pace to go back to Ms. Putney’s Lost Lords and revisit some of the characters that I recall in a dim hazy burst of memory. This is a well-written story about Daniel Herbert, who has dedicated his life to medicine and helping those less fortunate than himself.  When he unexpectedly inherits a title and fortune, he determines to seek a sensible wife who will help alleviate his loneliness and be a suitable helpmate in his endeavors.  Jezebel definitely did not fit into this endeavor, but…

Daniel didn’t even realize he is lonely until he unexpected inherits his new title and fortune. Determined to marry a respectable lady, possibly a widow, who can support him in his endeavors to help those less fortunate than himself he finds himself enthralled by a lady whom the ton is calling the “black widow.”

Jessie Kendall for all h,er beauty, has had a difficult life. Her few years of happiness ended with the death of her elderly husband. Determined to protect her daughter, she’s looking for a suitable elderly husband who can keep her daughter safe from her villainous nephew-in-law. The very rich and handsome Daniel Herbert, for all that he inspires less than saintly feelings in her breast, is definitely not the right man for her. Well, circumstances force their hand and danger stalks them.

I enjoyed the background with the cottage hospitals that Daniel is determined to endow and create and, of course, Jessie’s past, as it catches up with her, is a revelation that keeps the reader reeling. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Grade: A

Summary:
After the death of his sweetheart when he was at university, Daniel Herbert buried his grief in medical studies and his passion for healing. Viewed as a saint by those who know him, in his own mind he never quite manages to live up to his own high standards.

Most men would be thrilled to learn they’ve inherited a title and estate from a distant relative, but Daniel is appalled because the burden of wealth will interfere with his medical calling. Warily he accepts that he must enter society and seek a wife—a sensible woman who can oversee his properties, leaving him free to continue his work. He does not expect to become intoxicated by a woman called the Black Widow, who is as mysterious as she is shockingly beautiful…

Jessie Kelham’s looks have always been a curse. Now alone with a young daughter and a perilous secret, she is in need of protection. But dangerously attractive Daniel Herbert is not the kind of husband she has in mind. If he recognizes her, the demons of her past will surely erupt. Yet they cannot keep apart—and soon they are drawn into a union that may bring joy—or shattering danger…
