Veena’s review of Silver Skin (Cold Iron, Book 2) by D.L. McDermott
Paranormal Romance published by Pocket Star 14 Apr 14

I love strong women protagonists and Helene Whitney definitely fits the bill. Her character, coupled with a strong emotional centuries-old hero, just turned me into a mass of goo. I am so glad to have discovered this fantastic new voice and sorry to have started at Book 2, not just because it would have been nice to read the books in order, but mostly because I could have found her that much earlier.

Helene Whitney is sure that she’s losing time and memories. She knows something is seriously wrong when she reaches out to her best friend Beth and finds she’s unable to voice her fears. Now she has no choice but to reach out to the one person that she wants to avoid, the immortal fae sorcerer Miach MacCecht. She’s still not fully recovered from her last encounter with him and his family.

However, when she finally knocks on his, door it’s like she’s stepped into an E-ticket ride at Disneyland where one adventure rapidly leads into the next with little or no recovery time in between. I’m fascinated by the memory spell that’s eating up Helene’s time and how the author likens its effect to Alzheimer’s. The fae court has been banished from the human world, but they’re plotting to get back and release the wild hunt, only in the process of trying to get back, they’ve found tools whom they’re turned into zombie-like creatures. I feel equal parts of fascination and disgust.

The author has developed some great three-dimensional characters with strong emotional impact. The friendship, love, and loyalty that has survived hundreds of years takes the story out of the norm. I certainly hope that we find out what happens between Diedre and Kevin in the next story, since the author left them on a cliff in this one. But what really makes a fan of me is the love story between Miach and Helen. He is such a strong and powerful man and yet the way he approaches Helene and woos her leaves goosebumps on my skin.

Clearly, I can’t wait to read Elada’s book next, and hopefully we’ll get to see all the other great characters that we’ve met so far.

Grade:A

Summary:

Helene Whitney has been losing time. Not losing track of time—but finding whole blank spaces, hours, in her day she can’t account for. A year ago she would have written it off as overwork and exhaustion, but that was before she found out about the Good Neighbors, the Fair Folk, the Beautiful People, the Fae.

Ancient, immortal, tricksy, and cruel, these creatures out of myth and legend rule the Irish enclaves of South Boston and Charlestown, and one of them has been using magic to abduct and control Helene for hours every day. That’s because the collection at her museum contains ancient objects of Fae power, and the Fae want access to this magic for their own ends. Now, Helene’s only hope of escaping this unknown assailant lies with the Fae sorcerer Miach MacCecht, a man she knows she can never trust—and who may prove impossible to resist.
