Veena’s review of Shadow’s Curse (Imnada Brotherhood, Book 2) by Alexa Egan
Paranormal Romance published by Pocket Books 26 Sep 13
I am constantly amazed at the creativity of the authors who write in this genre as they give their own unique twist to the paranormal. We meet wealthy aristocrat David St. Leger in his wolf skin prowling the streets of London where he comes to the aid of a damsel in distress. He’s been bitten before when he and his teammates came to the aid of the fey and were cursed for who they were. Now he’s being blackmailed into escorting to the most dangerous part of the world a young lady he’s rescued – and that’s after she’s rewarded his efforts the first time with imprisonment.
Callista Hawthorne is a half-fey necromancer. She uses her talent acting as a medium to reach the dead in exchange for a fee. Her talents, however, have come to the notice of unscrupulous elements who recognize that what she can do will help them in their attempt at world dominion.
She has no other choice but to run away. Her only haven is her aunt, whom she knows of only through stories told by her mother. Her aunt, however, is in Scotland and the path is long and dangerous, especially now that she will be hunted by her brother and his friends.
Callista rescues David from his imprisonment by her brother in exchange for safe escort. The story morphs into their journey and the various people they meet on their way, both friend and foe, and how they overcome all odds to eventually arrive to that safe haven that isn’t really safe after all.
The story is like an interesting quest where each choice opens up the next step of the path for them. Also, trust and faith play an integral part in the outcomes. I quite enjoyed the story and am also pleased to see that us puny humans under the right circumstances can bring about outcomes that magic and power can’t always.
This is my first book by Ms. Egan, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the Inmada will conquer their enemies and find their place keeping human kind safe from all the evil elements that want to overrun the world we live in.
Summary:
Can desire’s magic defeat the powers of darkness?
Forced by her half-brother to use her dark gift of necromancy for profit, lovely Callista Hawthorne is determined to flee to her one chance for safety, her aunt in Scotland. With no hope of success unless she finds help on the long road north, she offers cursed shape-changer David St. Leger an irresistible bargain.
David—one of the mysterious Imnada—stalks the night streets of Regency London as a large, black wolf. Renounced by his own kind, he spends his desperate rage on thieves and murderers. While Callista offers him escape from the terrible enchantment binding him, agreeing to her terms will force him into the treacherous world of the half-Fey Other, his clan’s ancient foes.
Drawn together by danger, David and Callista find passion in each other’s arms. But can they foreswear the centuries of enmity separating their two races, and find a love they dare not even imagine?
