Book CoverVeena’s review of Dangerous by Jacquelyn Frank writing as  JAX
Paranormal Romance published by Kensington 05 Sep 13

Ms. Frank has an extraordinary talent of creating new and unique paranormal species, as evidenced by her popular Nightwalker and other spinoffs of the series. In what I hope will be the first of a new series, she introduces a new species called morphates, who are mutated humans and virtually indestructible. This is a fast-paced story that incorporates action and suspense into a beautiful romance.

Liam Nash runs a top-of-the-line security company and his team is trained and drilled to perfection. Armed with the best of technology and toys, they are ready for any challenge. Liam himself is ice cold, totally dedicated to duty with no time for play or fun – until he meets his newest client.

The reclusive billionaire Devon Candler is not the man who Liam assumed when he accepted his assignment. Instead she is the extraordinarily beautiful Devona and an extremely dangerous “morphate” to boot, as he discovers later in the story. The ways of the heart are strange, and Liam finds himself breaking all his self-imposed rules as he falls hard for Devon.

I remember seeing a movie called Escape from New York where the city was turned into a prison for the most dangerous elements and closed off. Please don’t laugh, because I am probably dating myself with that comment. Anyhow, the city is called Dark Manhattan here and it’s used as a sort of reservation to hold the Morphates apart from the more fragile humans. Don’t despair, the Morphates are not confined only to New York, because there are other dark cities with their own populations of Morphates, each city being ruled by an alpha. It’s all governed by a full-on Morphate council. Interesting world building, but it is set in the future, so we can let our imaginations soar as we read through the pages.

Devona was a scientist in her prior life who ran afoul of the mad scientist, who created the mutant race. She’s determined to arm the human race to be able to defend themselves against the unruly elements and break down the walls and lead a full life. I really admire a strong female protagonist, and then to have one with strong principles and beautiful to boot, what more can one ask for.

The author creates a strong cast of characters, both good and bad. I recently read and reviewed another standalone book by her that with an equally great story theme and cast of characters. I hope she has the time to turn this one into a series, because I definitely would like to know what happens to our protagonists, though there are some hints at the end, as well as to some of the characters we met in the pages of this book.

Grade: A
