Book Cover Dinca’s review of The Unintended Groom by Debra Ullrick
Historical Romance published by Steeple Hill 4 Jun 13

I enjoyed this story. It is delightful and entertaining with two little boys getting in on the action. The way they create a disaster out of words that pop out of the heroine’s mouth keeps the story rolling right along. No lulls between the pages with those scamps around.

Ms. Ullrick has created a most delightful and spunky character in Abby Bowen. After her dream of a husband and family died, she created a new one. The town council, which is  made up of men, won’t let her have her dream of opening a dinner theater without having a male partner.  After rejecting all of them, she advertises back east for the requisite man to create the needed partnership.

Harrison Kingsley has never wanted to be like his father and now that his dad is deceased, all he wants to accomplish is to right the man’s wrong. To do this he has to meet the requirements of his father’s will. Harrison has accepted a partnership in the Royal Grand Theater that should cover the conditions nicely, if all turns out well. There is only one major hitch…his new, lovely partner.

Harrison’s twin sons, Josiah and Graham, are a handful. If you like children, you will laugh and cry with them as much as I did. They are an integral part of the story.

The Unintended Groom is a warm and lovely story, well written with no noticeable editorial slips. The main characters have well-defined personalities. I think maybe the author could have touched on the other women in the household. But since this is the last book in the series, I suppose it has to end here. Maybe Ms. Ullrick will consider another series featuring the three sisters working in the Royal Grand Theater in this make-believe town.

I have not read the other Bowen family stories in this series and not once felt like I had to go back and read any of them. This book is very much a standalone in its own right.

Summary:

A Perfect Partnership

When Abby Bowen’s dream of love is dashed, she pursues a new dream: opening a dinner theater in Hot Mineral Springs, Colorado. There’s just one hitch: she needs a male business partner. The handsome father of twins who answers Abby’s ad is perfect…perhaps too perfect. Working with someone like Harrison Kingsley—without losing her heart—will be harder than Abby anticipated.

It’s a good thing Harrison’s arrangement with Abby is strictly business. Because with her kind soul, smiling blue eyes and gentle way with his boys, he could easily fall for her. But the longer he works with Abby, the more Harrison realizes that the Lord might have an entirely different partnership planned for them.
