Dinca’s review of Lucky Like Us (Hunted Series, Book 2) by Jennifer Ryan
Contemporary Romance published by Avon Impluse 9 Apr 13
Another very good read by Jennifer Ryan. She knows how to write an emotional story. I so enjoyed reading about ‘Dickweed,’ as dubbed by Agent Turner, who is the ex-boyfriend-turned-stalker of sweet Elizabeth Hamilton. Every time the agent referred to him as ‘Dickweed,’ I got a smile on my face. His name is Jarred, but he did not deserve a real name after he was identified as ‘Dickweed’. He not only hurt Elizabeth, but he’s an animal! The second threat to Elizabeth and Agent Sam Turner is not a smiling matter at any time. He is really creepy and kept me awake at night.
Owner of a bakery called Decadence, Elizabeth Hamilton is as sweet as they come, and Agent Sam Turner deserves someone sweet and kind in his life. Elizabeth, on the other hand, needs someone who will care about her for her, not who she knows or the size of her bank account.
Elizabeth hears a noise outside her house late at night and goes to investigate. At first, I thought ‘dumb,’ but it works as I kept reading. She sees a man hurt in the street, with a big SUV barreling down on him. She does the only thing she can to save them both. Trying to protect him, she puts herself in harm’s way and ends up shot and almost strangled to death.
The more Agent Sam Turner falls in love with Elizabeth, the more he hates himself. He can’t forgive himself for shooting her, even if he was shot, beaten and drugged beforehand. The kindness and understanding from Elizabeth’s family only makes him feel worse. The only thing keeping him together is knowing he has to be there for her and protect her from the serial killer who knows she is the only one who can identify him.
I love all the strong characters in this story. I sure hope Ms. Ryan will bless us with tales of Elizabeth’s brothers and the very charming Agent Tyler. Until then, next in the Hunted series is The Right Bride with Cameron Shaw. I am sure we will continue to run into Elizabeth and Agent Sam Turner in his adventure. I am looking forward to it very much.
Grade: A
Summary:
The Hunted series continues as Special Agent Sam Turner discovers that protecting the FBI’s star witness is more difficult than he thought!
Bakery owner Elizabeth Hamilton’s quiet life is filled with sweet treats, good friends, and a loving family. But all of that is about to turn sour when an odd sound draws her outside. There’s a man lying unconscious in the street, a car speeding toward him. Without hesitation, she gets the man out of harm’s way before they’re run down.
Unwittingly, Elizabeth has put herself in the path of a serial murderer, and as the only one who can identify the FBI’s Silver Fox Killer, she’s ended up in the hospital with a target on her back.
All that stands between her and death is Special Agent Sam Turner. Against his better judgment, Sam gets emotionally involved, determined to take down the double threat against Elizabeth—an ex desperate to get her back, despite a restraining order, and a psychopath bent on silencing her before she can identify him.
They set a trap to catch the killer—putting Elizabeth in his hands, with Sam desperate to save her. If he’s lucky, he’ll get his man … and the girl.
