Book CoverGwen’s review of Primal Needs (Primes, Book 7) by Susan Sizemore
Contemporary paranormal romance released by Pocket Star 30 Dec 08

I’ve read several of the Primes books – not all, but several.  I’m always entertained by them.  The characters are interesting, and the world they inhabit is unique.  Not too many vampire novels are based on a matriarchal society.  Plus we have werewolves, and vampire hunters, and the whole thing is often deliciously sexy and brutal by turns.  That isn’t to say all of these books are perfect, however…

Here’s what I wrote after I read this book: “ARGH!  Here i was enjoying a good book, when it fell apart in the last couple of chapters.”

Did you ever cut into a golf ball when you were a kid?  If you cut into the ball far enough, they used to have miles and miles of rubber bands inside that would unravel like ramen noodles meeting hot water  – they don’t make ’em like that any more.   Sadly, that’s what it felt like this book did at the end.  It’s like it imploded or something.

It starts with really good characters.  The hero and heroine know each other and are in love with each other.  The story unfolds and is a great yarn with several separate storylines coming together – Joe and Sidonie, Sidonie and her son, Tony and Rose, and all the Clan/Family/Tribe machinations.  I’m reading along, enjoying myself, loving the romance.  Then.  Blam!  It just didn’t work toward the end.  The author made it sound like the badguys wanted it to evolve the way it did, but I just didn’t buy it.  It was all way too easy and convenient and a lot was just plain confusing.

Sadly, there are several other, better Primes novels.  I can’t recommend this one unless you’re a real fan and have to positively read everything in a series.
