The first movie I recall seeing is at a drive in with my mom and grandmother, we were watching a double feature of Children of the Corn and Christine. I don’t recall when I first started to adore horror movies but tis safe to say we can blame my mom ;).
I recall at one of my Halloween parties, a friend called her mom because she was too scared after one of the movies. She was out of school for a week sick, I think it was just a coincidence. Oddly I haven’t seen many flicks as of late and I am not sure if that is cuz they have gotten too crappy for even me or if it is just that… ::gasp:: I am old.
So here are some of my all time faves! Tell me what yours are or something new you would rec for a Halloween viewing *g*.
This is one of my faves and I do like the first few sequels – didn’t know it is being remade for a 2009 release! Hope it doesn’t suck.
Halloween
The scream queen’s first movie… and one of the best slasher films. I loved the second as well and HATED the 3rd. H20 was a great take and of course Jamie Lee was in it as well.
My Bloody Valentine
It has been forever since I have seen this but it one I has seen tons. And one of my favorite titles. Holy Hell it has a remake coming out too, looks like Jan of 2009 in 3D.
Entity
This movie still scares the crap out of me and I don’t believe in ghosts. I think it scared the control freak in me ;). It is is suppose to be based on a true story.
Creep Show
good reason not to smoke *g* and this is the movie that did in the girl from the party…
Prom Night
Jamie Lee again 😉 and YES this was remade this year… haven’t seen it and didn’t plan on it but the trailer looks sort of good. Or I am just twisted.
No need to comment on that last part 😛

Not truly horror in my mind but too much good fun to leave off. No matter how many movies have come after it trying to do the same thing (poke fun at a genre) the Scream movies do it best. Well and Airplane but that is a different post *g*
Nightmare on Elm Street
One of Wes Craven’s best movies (along with TS&TR and Scream) although I don’t think I have ever been able to rewatch The Last House on the Left so maybe it is grand too. I think I like my horror movies to be outside the realm of possibility and TLHotL and Texas Chainsaw Massacre seem way to possible in my mind.
Whatever you do, Don’t. Fall. Alseep. I loved the first three and think I liked the 4th. Can’t recall if I have seen the rest. Have not seen Freddy vs Jason… even I have my limits.

From Dusk Til Dawn
One of my fave vamp flicks not really a slasher movie but hey vamps…
I love From Dusk til Dawn.
I rec:
Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness: Funny more than scary, plus the protagonist is smart enough to check the gun for bullets.
The Hitcher (original): More psychological than bloody, but totally awesome.
Near Dark: Vamp movie, same writer as Hitcher, just as awesome
VERSUS: Oh so stylish zombie film (not that scary, just awesome) that’s even more humorous if you watch the terrible dub
28 Days Later: Again, more psychological – the humans are more monstrous than the zombies, Cillian Murphy ups the awesome factor.
I can watch Scream and Halloween any time they’re on.
Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm St. scared the shit out of me when I was little, but I love them now.
Hmm…haven’t seen anything real good lately. I like to watch a lot of Tim Burton this time of year. He puts me in the spirit.
Oh! y’know what was pretty good? 30 Days of Night (I think I got that right).
OMG, The Entity! I just remember that scene where it starts punching her in the face on her bed. That was the WRONG movie to see while living in a series of haunted houses, lol.
I’m not making that up. Seriously. We had one house where many nights you’d hear someone walk up the back stairs in heavy boots, dragging something, and walking around above our heads. Usually when Dad wasn’t home–did I mention he worked nights?? Later found out that the people who’d lived there several years before were an abusive man who eventually killed his wife and dragged her up to the second floor, though I forget what he did up there. Anyway, they couldn’t keep anyone in the house and we didn’t stay long either. It eventually had to be leveled and no one put a house on that lot for at least ten years that I know of.
Oh, and Carrie! Not that it’s terribly scary, except for that f’n hand at the end. But when you’re seven and you have to cross an empty lot (there were several where I lived) to get home from school every day, that movie was an unholy nightmare, lol.

Scariest movie I ever watched was the one where Nicole Kidman (did you know she is American? Born in Hawaii!) and Sam Neill are hijacked by a seriously craaaazy Billy Zane – “Dead Calm”. That movie scared the crap out of me.
Next to that is the space one with Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman, “The Sphere”.
I like the “we’re the enemies” kind of movies. I hate the slasher flicks – I start laughing at how ridiculous they are.

I tend to go for the more subtle, creepy movies, rather than the gross-out or the slasher flicks. I really liked The Others, Pan’s Labyrinth, and The Orphanage. They don’t really keep me up nights or anything, but they’re definitely spooky.
And the scary ones for me are: of course, The Exorcist, and, more recently, The Descent – though the end is way messed up on that one. When I was younger, Candyman completely freaked me out. I refused to go into the bathroom if the lights weren’t on.
I’m not big into “slasher” type horror movies, although I get a kick out of the Scream trilogy.
Scariest movies? Silence of the Lambs and Seven. I can rewatch Silence fairly regularly, but to this day I can only watch Seven in drips and drabs. There are scenes in that movie that I just do not need to see again.
And you didn’t ask – but Leah mentioned one of them, My Man is creeped out by The Others and The Sixth Sense.
You know what movie that creeped me out and was totally ignored? The Kevin Bacon flick, “Stir of Echoes.” I LOVED that film and it completely freaked me out. I watch it every chance I get.
Oooooh, I forgot about Stir Of Echoes! I agree with Gwen, that one is creepy!
Oh Stir of Echoes was good! Silence of the Lambs is great for some reason though I find Seven, The Others and The Sixith Sense not really ‘rewatchable’ unless it has been a long time between viewing.
I am a total insomniac, which is why I tend to return emails at odd times and such. I reread books and will often have movies or stand up playing on DVD or HBO on Demand. I decided it was tres odd I would play The Exorcist over and over and be able to cat nap to it. Poltergeist & From Dusk Til Dawn as well…

Candyman! Heeeeeee good flick. The People Under the Stairs I recall being lame and the most omg I can’t believe I paid to see this AT the movies was Leprechaun.

I suppose I should speak up for the chickens of the world and say that horror movies don’t do it for me. Granted, my mother still gets kicks out of the story about me being scared of the Garfield Halloween Special as kid as well as the fun pictures of my sister and I in costumes, she’s a witch and I’m a ghost. There’s a before and after picture, before we’re both smiling for the camera and after I’m bawling after my sister said something to scare me and she’s got an evil grin on her face.
Horror is not my idea of viable entertainment. 😛
Love Silence of the Lamb. Seven was a rough movie for me. Far scarier than any slasher flick. I cannot do The Exorcist. It freaks me the heck out.
My husband swears The Changeling is the scariest movie. I checked it out of the library twice, but haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it.

Devon, one of my close friends just watched The Changeling. She said it was kinda freaky but was more scared by the guys she was with jumping at her. I’ve seen a number of horror movies with her and know that if she can make it through a horror movie it’s not that scary. ^_^

Scariest movie for me, THE ENTITY. Seen it twice in my life. That is not a movie to watch while you live alone. I remember watching and sleeping with the lights on for a week. Yes, it was that scary. It was also based on a true story.
Next scary movie for me would be THE EXORCIST – even bought the movie. It’s good and one that I don’t mind watching from time to time but that scene where Reagan while she is possessed and waiting for the exorcist outside her house freaks me the fuck out each and every time. I always have to close my eyes when that scene comes up.
Keishon – Bacon’s intensity when he was digging around in the basement scared the crap out of me. That is such a good movie, and I’m not a horror flick fan. I need to buy the DVD…

There’s a scene in there – a broken fingernail that icks me out. Believe it or not, that’s the reason why I won’t buy the movie. May have to rethink that. I haz weak stomach.
I have never been to a Drive In. We don’t have them here. Too windy and cold LOL! I love scary movies though and have seen most of the ones you mentioned.
