Alison Tyler wants you to know her name isn’t Prince, she isn’t a sexy muther fucker, could be willing to go crazy but she ain’t funky
.
Nor does she seem to read this site, no one tell her a C is average and we don’t think of that as a ‘bad grade’ but FAR from me to stand in the way of an author giving away free shit.
So get thee to Trollop with a Laptop (she has awesome taste in duckies but seems strangely annoyed at typos ::shrug:: go figure). I am gonna fly dangerous and not even proof read this. Good luck in winning, do let us know if you need a place to review it.
*sigh* Don’t you hate it when you read a review and think, “Hmm, looks good enough to check out” and then you read the author’s blog and think, “Then again maybe not.”
Gawd I love Prince. I was HEARTBROKEN I didn’t get to see his concert in San Antonio when he was here last year.
No shit. And if you hit that button on the end it KEEPS playing all the Prince vids on MTV.
I have been doing that ALL DAY
I totally agree, Rowena.
Well, lime, I think she should give you a couple of free books or something anyway just for the ideas she’s getting on that 27th letter for one of her books down the road. Without that typo she wouldn’t have that or the buzz it’s generated to get people to visit her site! I find it curious that she harped on other stuff, especially that typo, which we all have, even Alison Tyler, from time to time, in your review instead of taking the kudos you gave her for the quality of her writing. I’d think an author would be glad to have that said of her writing. Or at least mention it during her gripe. But what the hell do I know!
And I never liked Prince. Ever. He’s way too scrawny and just not, well, sexy to me. He makes me shudder for all the wrong reasons.
Oh hell. I should not write reviews at like 3 am. But you know what? English is my third language. So, sorry on my fuck up. Clearly I got my alphabets mixed. Sue me. (No really – go on and do it.)
😛 Gawd. I had to get up @ 6 am for training all day, and then come back to this. Haha – thanks for jumping all over that.
I’m just gonnna say, I’m an Alison Tyler fangirl-complete with squee- and I have been for years. Rowena, I’d suggest trying out some Tyler; the woman has either written or edited something for everyone. I give her serious props for making good erotica much more accessible for women, especially women who don’t care for ebooks.
I probably shouldn’t have brought her comments to anyone’s attention, but I thought it was dang funny. lime, I didn’t realize English wasn’t your first language-I just know you write a ton and thought you made a typo. My bad.
Sybil, thanks for linking to her site. I hope she does get some new fans.
Oh no worries as I would have seen it from the links at some point. Honestly I have no issue with the author and I think we talked about her before. Her first post was a whatev, it was the repeated oh this doesn’t bother me, no really, this doesn’t bother me, no no no this is ok… BUT
Seriously screw that crap. It was a contest book that lime won she could or could not have reviewed it. She did, the author has no right to bitch at a reader for whatever the fuck she says in a review.
You don’t want a book in a contest you give away reviewed – DONT DO CONTESTS. This response was completely classless and stupid and leaves nothing but a bad taste in my mouth.
You can review her, hell anyone is welcome to guest review her, I am open to that for readers. Because this is a READER blog. READER
AS in the fucking people who buy the books… so feel free to use all the I’s, me, or you thinks you want in your review. Personaly “I” think I will be skipping right by anything she writes and will not be buying her unless I seriously like the author she is editing. And guess what? I don’t think she will cry over the loss.
Then again I wouldn’t think an author with this many years under her belt would whine over such a stupid ass thing as a C review.
An average book for a VERY below average writer from how she has acted. And if that is snarky of me – oh fucking well.
I hold fast to my opinion that any review is a good review. Meaning free publicity. I’d never heard of this author before, and it sounds like something I might have enjoyed, as I like a bit of leather in my dirty books.
Then again, I’m the one who went ahead and put up the DNF review of the ghost book.
The contest was funny, actually, if she hadn’t been so indignant, for no good reason, IMO. But didn’t we just discuss whether or not reviewers should review books outside of their comfort zone? lime said why the book didn’t work for her, and she liked things about the book as well, that she mentioned. Readers are smart enough to take what they want from a review, and I bet as many would be intrigued as turned off by what she wrote.
I agree Devon and almost reposted the No Crying in Reviewing but hell it feels like it was just posted.
The contest was funny, the thing that got me was just how stupid it is to try and make the people you are wanting to buy your books feel stupid. For trying to put rules of how dare you not like something you got for free. And of course the general idea behind don’t read a book that is a genre that is outside your comfort zone.
Sort of flies in the face of what laura d was saying. She has done great things for women, ok but only if you like everything she writes? Only if you edit your thoughts on a reader blog better than the books themselves because I would be shocked as shit if there are no – not one – typo in any of her books cuz she has a ton published she has written and edited.
But I tend to agree with you any review is a good review because “I” buy off ‘bad’ reviews all the time. Or will pick something up because of one for whatever reason.
I think I “read” her comments differently than others might have. I didn’t see any upset over the reading of a book outside a book outside one’s comfort zone, but with the reviewing of one. And I sorta got that. Imagine your immediate take on a romance review that started off with “I don’t read silly romance but I found one in an airport..”.
No, I don’t think anyone is obligated to like something because it’s free, or else why ARCs? But when we win a contest from a third party site, should we namecheck it? For instance, I won “Cry Wolf” from Avid Reader. If I review it for the site, it just seems like it would be the right thing to do to give Keishon a thank you for the book-since it was a contest.
And per typos, ironically she blogged about being caught on a big one just a few days ago. AT will take the piss out of her ownself. While I can see that you’re a mama bear (!), I don’t think that Ms. Tyler quite belongs in the pantheon of Authors Behaving Badly along with some of the worst. I think she’s got a quirky sense of humor and she’s having some fun with a typo in a review.
Sigh. Gotta go to work now.
I like a bit of context in reviews. What if lime had written a really negative review without saying that Erotica wasn’t her normal cup of tea, and instead focused on those things she didn’t like. As things stand, I feel it reads that she liked things about the book in spite of her lack of for this type of book.
It’s a great thing when a reader tries something new and is pleasantly surprised. If it doesn’t work out, hey, maybe some one else will like it. I always mention whether or not I’ve read something else by the author, similar types of books, what my expectations were, etc. It gives others an idea of where I’m coming from in my review.
The contest would have been great fun, if the author hadn’t expressed how upset she was with the review. It makes it a bit sour grape-y. Else, it would’ve just been quirky fun.
BTW, did you know that Pearl was Jenny Calendar on S2 of Buffy (the best season of TV ever)? Random factoid.
I’m getting sick of people telling me I don’t like erotica. [Although I might not now by association.] It’s not my favorite, but I never said I didn’t like it. In fact, I’ve said I avoid romantic suspense – yet some of my favorite authors and favorite books are from that genre. Riddle me that.
And I didn’t remember where the book had come from. I go through bursts of ordering, buying, and getting books, and I have no idea where I got some of them. Apparently, mistakes are not ok. Sorry. I’m just human. Thanks to Lust Bites for the book. Again.
Lime, they’re getting that from this:
Eh, I thought the post was funny. She didn’t get that a C wasn’t a bad review but an average one, which I think caused her confusion. The first part of the original post is how you flipped between nice and bad things which confused her.
So you need to either completely hate or love a book for the author to get it?
I already have a migraine so maybe that is why I can’t wrap my arms around that idea. Or maybe it is just cuz I find it to be a stupid. Like many people see me thinking that average doesn’t have to equal TEH BIG BAD EVOL.
It is what it is. People are welcome to agree or disgree with any review be it a reader or author. So it has nothing to do with liking the review or the site. Hellif I care, people can disagree with lime, I do it all the time. People can disagree with me – many do, all the time. Was she insluting to the genre? I don’t recall her review reading like a dis on erotica but even if she was than disagree with her, trying to mock her or point out how the reviewer is stupid while you are oh so clever – reeks.
And really I would rather people pick up a romance, read it and not like it than just dismiss it out of hand without ever reading it. I would like that person to be able to talk about the book without a fear of people making them feel like an asshole for disliking it. And I would hope people would offer them rec’s to fit what they liked to encourage them to read more. The response to the review doesn’t encourage a reader to read more of a genre or an author.
In fact one thing I say over and over and over is a C grade here is ALWAYS an author the reviewer would read again. It is a book that might have been an average read for the reader but she sees something that would make her want to pick back up that author. It is a big thing between what makes a read a “C” or a “D” grade. I would bet since the review went up to right this second lime prolly feels differently about if she would pick up another book by the author or not. Of course maybe that was the authors point?
Liv- I know where they’re getting it from, and you cannot imagine how much I regret being vague or trying to qualify anything. I had thought that the rest of the review would have explained it. And like I’ve said how many other times I don’t know – I hadn’t formed a concrete opinion of erotica yet. (Though at this point I may have.) And I was asked to post a review for erotica. I just wasn’t OMGYAYEEEE I GET TO READ EROTICA! Nor was I UGH I HATE THIS. I DON’T WANNA. I was just “oh- ok 🙂 I’ll do it.”
I was trying to get the point across, that I don’t read erotica every day, and I haven’t read too much of it, but I am/was interested.
Haha- and thank you Sybil. That’s exactly what I have been trying to say. Probably it’ll have more weight coming from you. And… yes. I do feel differently now. I’m getting my own damn migraine. Hopefully yours goes away soon.
LOLOLOL omg… I am so laughing. I should go do a post since I see next up erotic romance review will prolly make another author cry. le sigh the shit I subject people too… I should feel such shame
maybe tomorrow
I’ve read a book by Alison Tyler. I’m pretty sure it was a Cheek-published book. I couldn’t finish it though, I recall thinking it was pure drivel, but that was probably because I may have been comparing it to an Emma Holly book I’d just read.
This type of reaction to a relatively tame review doesn’t make me want to give her a second try anytime soon though.
