1. Get an agent.
2. Never say ‘yes’ before reading a contract.
3. Be humble — but not a door mat.
4. Know your own worth — no one else will.
5. Realize that there is always room for improvement.
6. When a book is done, leave it alone.
7. Pick your battles wisely.
8. You do not have to defend your work.
9. Without readers you are nothing but a pretentious quack.
