1. Checkmate (Lymond Chronicles, Book 5 6)Â by Dorothy Dunnett
Sybil, got weepy even reading my list again! Just one thing – Checkmate is the last book in the Lymond series, book 6. But please if anyone’s going to read it, start with book one. They’re the most amazing series I’ve ever read in my life. They’re like nothing else!
Although technically not a romance, the first book that I remember being so emotionally involved with that I bawled inconsolably was Little Women. Beth’s death scene still dissolves me in tears no matter how many times I’ve read it.
I forgot to say that Cry No More turned me into a blubbering bawling mess. OMG, that was heartbreaking!
Oh, I looooove Persuasion!! Favorite Jane Austen book EVAH.
Bev, I just absolutely lost it in Cry No More – it should have been called CRY LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS. But what wonderful writing? And that book was really true, to me. I love Linda Howard’s books generally but this one just really touched my heart. And yes, I howl in Little Women too!
Kate, Persuasion rocks, doesn’t it? In a JA sort of way!
Cry No More’s Epilogue was one of the most gut wrenching I have ever read.
And a pretty sexy hero to boot. 🙂
Ah, Cry No More! Not a book to read when you’re pregnant, as I did. I love that book. Excellent choices, Madame Campbell! I love a good weepy read.
