Witch in the House by Jenna McKnight

Jade Delarue is an excellent witch. A super witch even, but after helping a young couple unite her spell takes a wrong turn. While thanking the spirits for helping with one spell, she makes another for herself, so she can find her true love. What Jade isn’t expecting an exact match to her spell to show up on her door within hours.

Mason Kincaid has just been jilted at the alter, then spent the next few days trying to drink away his feelings. His friends are worried and put him back on his private investigator job by sending him from sunny Florida to snowy Missouri. Mason’s not happy about this, but he knows he’s got to get on back on the job.

Neither Jade nor Mason is prepared for the instant attraction, but Jade knows she’s made a mistake, and wants him gone. Mason has always been afraid of commitment, but Jade is making him rethink his bachelor lifestyle. And his case is starting to get in the way because he doesn’t like lying to Jade.

As Mason spends more time with Jade, he knows time could be running out on his case, but he doesn’t want time to run out on his time with her. Jade knows that a man like Mason can’t stay around forever and she’s unsure about life with a man after quite a few years alone. Secrets and lies stay away only for so long and then Jade has a choice: love or more years alone?

Lies and secrets aside, Jade and Mason have a great connection, and obviously are caring people that life hasn’t dealt the nicest hand to. They’ve got a great witty banter and love teasing each other as much as they like being teased. The teasing spills over into some steamy chemistry and super hot. . .bedroom action. Or in front of a fireplace action. Next to an indoor waterfall action.

One of the things that Jade has to deal with is the small-mindedness of her local, church loving community, though a significant portion of the population know about her special status and why she doesn’t attend church like the rest of the town’s population.

With an array of supporters of Jade, as well as a couple of fellow witches, and Mason’s friend and partner Anthony, there are plenty of lively characters to keep the reader entertained along with Jade and Mason themselves. Even Mason’s ex-fiancee and her new love, who happen to live in a neighboring town (oh the coincidences in the world).

The thing that bothered me about this otherwise witty, sexy and sweet tale was Jade’s reaction when Mason’s secret came out. She seemed to take it way to hard and forced Mason to do all the effort when she had a lie, not on the same level, but still a lie about his coming into her life. It’s sweet and romantic what Mason does to convince her of his love, but still, there’s got to be a meeting half way sort of mentality.

Witty characters and a cute story do overcome the eye rolling actions of Jade and her dealing with the truth and Mason is probably one of the better heroes I’ve read about in some time.
