Cindi Myers has been recapping some of the spotlights from RWA in Dallas and is currently on Harlequin.
As you may know I am rather fond of them. Here is what she has to say about the ever fabu Harlequin Historical Line:
Tessa Shapcott spoke for Senior Editor Linda Fildew about Harlequin Historicals. These are “richly textured, intense stories set in a wide range of historical periods, from ancient Greece through World War II.”
The most popular heroes with Harlequin Historical readers are Regency Rakes and Cowboys. Westerns sell well in North America. The line welcomes variety. Each month they publish six books — one Regency, one Western, and four other books.
The author must create real and convincing characters and bring a historical period to life. Historical detail should be accurate, but should not overwhelm the story. Heroes are strong, dependable and commanding. The heroine is always sympathetic but she may be strong and willful or more shy.
Harlequin Historical is always looking for new talent and has bought 12 new authors over the past two years. The books are 75,000 words. Send a synopsis and the first three chapters to the London office.
Spacing and bolds are mine *g*. Elizabeth Lane has a MUST have coming out in Jan I will talk about more soon. And I am hoping to have some more info on what is coming up in 2008.
So what do you think? And really people… if you have a HH coming out… you should so email me.
Waiting for other publishers to get the memo….
I’m just happy somebody is still publishing westerns! I’ve been writing them since ’99. Although I tried to push the envelope on my last HH proposal with a slightly more rakish (non-cowboy) hero, and my editors shot it down. Boo! I was bummed. I guess they’re really serious about wanting “strong and dependable” heroes. (My guy would’ve gotten there eventually, I swear!)
Right now I’m brainstorming a novella for next year’s HH Halloween anthology (what a thrill to be invited!). My story will be an Arizona Territory-set western (at least that’s what I’m thinking so far!) Fingers crossed…
