Gwen’s review of Hunter’s Salvation by Shiloh Walker
Contemporary paranormal romance published 3 Jul 07 by Berkley Sensation
This paranormal is one of a series about the Hunters – a group of paranormal “cops” who keep us humans safe from “feral” paranormals. The heroine is a psychic telekinetic named Jess. The hero is a witch and retired Hunter named Vax Matthews. What is especially cool about the Hunters series is there are FEMALE Hunters – gasp, shock! I know, I know. It goes against all that is good and holy, but it’s TRUE!
Here’s the book blurb:
In this dazzling sequel to the bestselling novel Hunting the Hunter, Shiloh Walker returns to tell the story of another unique hero at the heart of a strange new world.
Vax was once committed to his life as a Hunter, tracking down the evil beings who prey on humans, but he opted out of the game long ago. Now, somebody, somewhere, is in danger. And, despite his best efforts, Vax can’t ignore his calling.

This is a fun book. It’s my first foray into the Hunters series and I liked it. It is an interesting world that Ms Walker has created here – lots of good story fodder. I can see why she has something like 12 books and stories based on it.Â
The characters and situations are more believable than others I’ve read. The character development is excellent and the character reactions to each other very genuine. I didn’t have any eye-rolling moments where a character does something boneheaded for the sake of the plot.
Some reviewers complain that they feel bereft at the beginning of the book, not having enough details about the character backgrounds, but I didn’t feel that. In fact, I felt like I could relate more to the kick-ass heroine, Jess – this was her first foray into the Hunters’ world as well. In addition, Shiloh does an excellent job helping the reader really feel Jess’s pain for her sister. You totally “get” her motivation.
I liked it. If you’re a fan of serial novels, you probably will too.
Grade: B-
You can see the list of all of the Hunters books, in order, on Shiloh’s website.
Don’t let the number of books in this series intimidate anyone. All but maybe book 7, The Hunters: I’ll Be Hunting You (Ellora’s Cave) can probably be read as a stand alone. You just won’t be as invested in the the characters that pop-up from previous books. But I have to say that this series just keeps getting better and better.
You know, it’s too bad blog comments don’t have spoiler tags, because it would be fun to discuss what the events in Hunter’s Salvation, mean for the series.
