Lori Foster does write some great men and I have really enjoyed her last two Bad Boy stories. And even though I didn’t care much for Jude’s Law, I am looking forward to Murphy cuz I am odd like that…
go forth and read the blog (this means you tara) and tell me what you think 😉
It’s funny, I was just thinking about this and pondering the blogging about it. It seems like I read so many comments saying that the person could never like any hero but an “alpha” or this hero doesn’t sound “alpha” enough, it got me wondering what alpha really means. This is actually a pretty good definition, or at least a definition of the kind of alpha heroes I like. I do think a lot of romance alpha heroes are also domineering, overbearing and unyielding. And that seems to float readers’ boats, even mine on occasion. But even when I find those characters sexy, in the back of my head I’m like, “I’d kill him within a month.” Foster’s description sounds more like real-life alphas. Kinda like my husband actually (who is a huge fan of PRIDE and UFC actually, and teaches Karate). I’m rambling, and I’m not making sense. Okay, what I’m trying to say is that I like Foster’s description, but I think plenty of romance alphas don’t actually fit it. Yeah I really have nthing to intersting to say.
Heh, I bookmarked Foster’s post earlier today then deleted because I figured I’d never have time to keep up with all the comments it would generate. Now, I’m bookmarking yours, Sybil, instead. Not sure what that means, exactly, but there it is.
Me, I’ve never, ever, defined an alpha as jerk. Protective, strong leader, yes. Family man, oh, yeah. Possessive, maybe, depending on the definition. But jerk? Absolutely not.
I love Alphas and completely agree with what she wrote, but that doesn’t mean I have to read her books does it?–LOL.
Please note, it does not say “being a jerk.â€
She’s correct of course – however that doesn’t exclude the fact that so many authors just get it wrong, wrong, wrong. I used to think I didn’t like Alpha heroes. Then I figured out that I liked Alphas, it was the assholes I had a problem with. You’d be amazed how many authors write assholes then merely brush them off as “alpha.” Uh, no. They’re Neanderthals. Huge difference.
As for Foster – I still think she writes great sex scenes, but her plots make me want to put my head through a wall.

Hmm, since I’ve really enjoyed several of her books and not so much a couple of others, I’d really have to know which particular plots this was referring to before I could see the problem with them in a general way. What exactly bothers you about them, Wendy?
Bev:
Ya know, I misspoke. It’s actually the way her characters behave that I find unconvincing. I’ve reviewed two Foster full length novels and both of them featured heroines that drove me insane. My reviews for TOO MUCH TEMPTATION and JUDE’S LAW should still be floating around in the TRR archives.
A good example of the sort of thing that drives me batty is in JUDE’S LAW. Someone is out to kill the hero. His life is in mortal danger. Does this bother him? No, his main concern is the fact that the full figured heroine wears shapeless clothing so he buys her a whole new wardrobe. Color me naive, but I’d be a bit more concerned about the guys TRYING TO KILL ME!
Yeah, I can see how that could come across. It didn’t bother me, though I couldn’t really tell you why. The rather abrupt ending to that one irritated me way more than the characters did.
