These are just some things I thought of off the top of my head.
Ice cream. Ok, the better question would be, when have I not loved it? But I have a greater appreciation for it now that I have my own ice cream maker. I got a lovely Cuisinart for my birthday, but making ice cream is *hard* – anyone have a suggestion or good recipes? My goal is to make amazing creations that taste like Jeni’s Ice Cream, or the delicious Argentinian gelato you get at Dolce Zza.
S’mores. I’ve missed out on the past few cookouts/barbecue’s… but I caved and made s’mores in the toaster oven yesterday. They were still delicious. Maybe not quite as fun as sitting around a smoky fire making them, but good nonetheless. And bug free. I think I’m growing up though π because I had 4 [eep yes, I did.] 2 with chocolate, and 2 without, and I found the ones with chocolate too sweet. Gah!
Cous cous. I haven’t had it in a long long time, and found myself craving some. This terrific little store at home sells boxes of it for 99Β’, and my favorite is the Roasted Garlic with Olive Oil. Yum. The Parmesan didn’t wow me, and I’m about to try the Toasted Pine Nut soon.
Pesto. This goes more with the first – the best pesto I’ve had in my life was at a country club on Long Island, at a cousin’s wedding. Amazing. The best ciabatta and pesto I’ve had was at a place that no longer seems to exist in NYC on the way to the UN building. It’s been years, and I still want a sandwich there. I recently bought myself a mini food processor. I’ve wanted one for years (all I need now is a Kitchenaid stand mixer) – and mine is EENSY. Still, the pesto I made was just a tad bit off – but good. Just not AMAZING. Any suggestions or recipes? And/or suggestions on what I can use a food processor for?
Surviving History. I’ve never been big on the History channel, but while surfing the boob tube one day, I was hooked. [I make little notes that I’m watching the show too – just ask the duckies.] It’s… so fascinating! I love history. Such a history buff/geek – which is partly why I love historicals. [I’m not too in depth on history so it’s perfect.] It’s interesting I love this show so much because I’m so anti blood, guts and gore. Well, not so much anti as I can’t handle it. I’m the girl sitting in the theater with her hands in front of her face, cringing away from the screen. Yup. It’s a fascinating show though, and I love how they recreate things, and put so much attention to detail. I like it a lot more than Mythbusters, because I feel the latter isn’t quite as meticulous. [So I’m a bit OCD too. Whatever.] I also love Surviving History because it’s in one of the best cities – Columbus, Ohio! Where my Buckeyes at?
Walking. I live in suburbia, so nobody walks. Well, I also live on a main road in my city, so from my driveway to the road is 40 mph – it’s a bit like real life frogger crossing it. I’ve taken to walking to the library – it’s a bit more than 2 miles – definitely doable. I get some funny looks walking because nobody does. At certain points, if there’s no sidewalk, drivers turn stupid. They swerve at me, or drive on the entire other side of the road to avoid me (which I prefer more than the former) – but it’s funny. We don’t know what to do with pedestrians. One day I’m going to ponder about how there are no outdoor activities for teens [outside of organized/school sports] – and how sad that is.
Nature shows. I grew up watching National Geographic specials, wanting to be a marine biologist. Somewhere, I lost that dream. (And that’s probably a good thing because AP Chem was not my best friend. That and somehow I’ve managed to avoid ever taking physics, through more than 18 years of school.) Last week, however, I caught Nature, on PBS, and squee’d my way through the ~55 minute program. I figure I can add working with some sort of nature organization some time as a career goal. (But I can’t see myself going for another degree and taking biochem and molgen, etc.) Ah well. I’ve recently been watching more of Planet Earth, though I was spoiled when I got to see it at a friend’s who had a home theater, with the most amazing sound system and HD.
THE OLYMPICS! I love the Olympics. Something in me just goes “EEEE” at the thought. Of course, this year I have some qualms and don’t know if I’ll watch the opening ceremonies… but then what does it matter if little ‘ol me does or doesn’t watch it? [But then…] So I don’t know. It makes me sad how a lot of American athletes choose not to go to the Olympics because they can make more money doing other things, or they just think they’re TOO amazing to go – one result being the 04 “Dream Team”? Embarrassing. Also, China is going to bring it. [I won’t even go into my issues. Although – one – the food pumped full of steroids. What are the countries that can’t afford to import their food do? They’re going to be disqualified! Or… is that China’s strategy? And dolphin suits… Grr.]
Recently I’ve been a watering pot. Seriously. I never cry. Ever. Not even during Titanic [and that’s before it became something of a joke.] Or funerals (generally). But… now, commercials can make me blubber. Well, choke up at least. This being one of the top. Anyway, I have at least one friend competing in the Olympics, so GO TEAM USA!
(And I still can’t watch that without my eyes welling up. If you don’t know what happened, his hamstring tore. So he’s not American. Still – it’s my favorite Olympics commercial, and holy ow.)
So anyway – what are your recent “yay” discoveries, or, what have you “re-discovered” that you’re very happy about?
We had that exact same couscous for dinner last night :). Even the picky toddler likes it! Of course, she insisted on eating it with her HANDS and it got everywhere… *sigh*
My best recent food discovery is Yogi Tea’s Stomach Ease tea that actually eases my stomach. I just ordered it in bulk.
My best recent re-discovery is the traditional Regency. Of course, the mass market lines are out of print, but sis and I have a stash.
Oooh, love Planet Earth and pesto! Also ice cream – my current favorite is Dreyer’s Peanut Butter Cup….
I love white tea with raspberry, Burn Notice, Bath and Body Works Kitchen Lemon soap, Google Reader, the smell of chlorine and Clairol Root Touch Up π
Zazzle.com where you can NOW make your own sneakers! Or send hilarious cups to your best friends – just because.
Twitter.com – I really like being able to be a blogger in miniature.
I bought myself a Kitchen Aid stand mixer in chrome, and it’s such a beautiful piece of equipment that I have to stand back and admire it. Then, like a nut case, I watch it work. (Just like I watch the front load washer spin. I don’t get out much.)
Organic tomatoes – I’m hooked. They just taste different.
Almond butter. Wow, just wow. (I lose the ability to be coherent when I’m drooling.)
Fudge Chocolate Coffee – still drooling (I know, what an attractive mental picture.)
Ruben Gonzalez – 3 time Olympian and great motivational speaker. Love his speech: Becoming Unstoppable
Scharffenberger (sp?) chocolate – can’t be bothered to look it up, but that stuff is good.

Yogi Tea’s Stomach Ease – huh. I’m definitely intrigued. and I’ve ALWAYS loved traditional regency π – in fact, I don’t know if these two fit your criteria, but I’m playing with the idea of buying “Angel in a Red Dress” by Judith Ivory, and/or “Once an Angel” by Teresa Medeiros

Karen – holy wow – make your own sneakers!? Twitter I just got but stull need to figure out. I did it because ABC new says it gets customer service’s attention. Well for some businesses.
Hahahaha! I’d watch a stand mixer too. We don’t have a front load washer :(. I’m sure I’d be making pavlova’s or marshmallows all the time.
Oooo organic tomatoes. We grow our own, but since we moved the soil is just different. We used to have a monster garden. O_o Almond butter sounds AMAZING. Wow. I… huh. I need to go find some. π Thanks for sharing all of that!
Gwen – Hm – mango salsa? I don’t think I’ve had that in a while :X I’m not big on sweet and savory. I LOVE Eloisa James… and Scharffen Berger is excellent chocolate. So is um… Valrhona, and Burdick’s!
I don’t like Dreyer’s. They have wonderful sounding flavors but they usually fail to perform. For the cheaper ice cream brands you can’t beat Bluebell or Blue Bunny.
I like making ice cream, but I don’t have a maker. I just use ziploc bags (and a coffee can, if I have one). Of course, it is difficult because I can’t make more than two servings at a time.
I like Stash teas, which I was introduced to, but I’m still a coffee girl. The only kitchen appliance that is actually mine is a coffeemaker.
I also love cake mixes. You can turn ’em into anything. My fave is probably mocha devil’s food cookies. Yum.
A relove would be flautas. I used to order them all the time, then stopped, but now I’m ordering them a lot again. So, so delicious.
Seeing the Dark Knight made me want to see Batman the Animated Series again. But I can’t afford it. *sigh*
You MUST see Burn Notice π I like the Dreyer’s – I do think it’s Edy’s in other parts of the country – because it’s so creamy. The soap is just their regular antiseptic soap, but I do love the Bigelow’s candles, too!

My family isn’t big on coffee- other than my sister. I always think it’s adorable when I see my parents have busted out the coffee maker because it’s so foreign. I haven’t made cake in forever. Not since I started making cakes from scratch.
I don’t think I’ve had flautas. Jealous. And… Dark Knight. I want to see it again. And which animated series? [Weren’t there a ton? Wireless mouse and keyboard! Good call! I don’t use desktops much – but wires do get annoying. Do they require batteries within each unit? [Can you believe this is something I’ve never really thought of?] My laptop might as well be an extension of myself however.
I work exclusively from a laptop. But when I’m at my “for real” desk, I have it in a docking station with a full-sized monitor, printer, and my trusty-dusty wireless keyboard and mouse. Love ’em.

Jody – gones? And… Wii! I want one – considering buying one but it would be so neglected (also I don’t know if I want to cough up the cost for just me). Also I’m still a bit scared from all those “Wii have a problem” pictures I saw.
I only use the coffee can to spare my hands. The mix isn’t that hard . . . milk, vanilla, sugar, flavoring.
Batman the Animated Series is the first one. It’s followed by Batman Beyond, which is in the DCAU ‘verse. There’s also the newer The Batman, but that show is in an alternate continuity. BtAS came on when I was a kid.

Lynne – whooaaa now you’re talking! I’ve been playing with the idea of getting a laptop cooling system/fan, because I leave my laptop all over the place [on the wrong type of surface.] I’m going to have to look into that.
Liv – But does it work? When we did it in chem [CP & AP π it didn’t] – it was more this stiff kinda soupy badness. My screen is ~12″ [going by the usual measurements by taking the diagonal] it’s supposed to weigh 4.1 lbs, but I got the extended battery. My desktop I used throughout college… uh… 18-19″ screen? I never use it anymore, poor thing, but it has the most amazing sound system.

I like Burn Notice a lot, too.
S’Mores we have to do every family cookout now, the kids love making them. I’m eating a lot of my favorite Haagen Daz now with the warm weather – Waffle Cone, vanilla with gooey caramel and chunks of waffle cone dipped in chocolate, yum. What I’m really dying for is to get back down to my father’s place in Boca where there’s the best small Italian place that makes the best cappucino and homemade gelato. When we’re down there, we go there every night.
And now the garden tomatoes are starting to ripen, taste so good, we’ll even just eat a tomato sandwich – favorite bread, tomato and mayo, delicous.

Gwen – thanks. Hm, slightly different from what I was expecting. Maybe I need a lap desk or something. Loved the second one. Oh my.
Liv- I don’t like doing that b/c the laptop gets too hot. Otherwise… I probably would. Mine’s a bit smaller (and older) than yours. Did you get the Michael Dell UT dropout discount? Cuz I did π
Pam – good to know. I LOVE s’mores and haagen daz. Mmmm. Want. Oh my gosh – stop describing all the deliciousness! π Gelato… delicious lovely gelato. I need to go to Little Italy again. I’ve never been huge on mayo – but the tomato, bread, mozarella and basil… [or pesto]…mmm…
And I can’t contain this. NO MORE FINALS WHEEE. Well, not for like another 15 weeks. But man. Too many finals in too short a period = sad Limecello.
UT dropout discount? I didn’t know there was one. And I’m not a UT dropout so I probably couldn’t get it . . .
I got the “we’re getting rid of last year’s model take it and these wonderful accessories” sale.

I use my food processor to make my own laundry detergent. Back when I was raising exotic birds, I used the food processor to make minced veggies for them. That’s probably not really helpful advice though…
Never had couscous, but I’ve seen those little boxes and I’ve been tempted to try them. Next time I think I will!

Hi Jen – Oh my goodness- you make your own laundry detergent? Now that’s a whole new world of making things from scratch. How/why do you do that? [Haha – it’s very interesting, though I won’t say I’ll do it.]
I hope you like cous cous! I can vouch for the toasted pine nut too. You may not like this, but I like cutting cherry tomatoes and eating it with the couscous, or with roasted zucchini. [Or I bet both roasted would be great.]
π Sorry about the food cravings. I’ve been craving real Mexican food.
I only do the laundry detergent thing because I have sensitive skin (redhead w/allergies) and it just costs too much to buy the special detergents the dermatologists recommend. The recipe is 1 cup Borax (from the laundry aisle), 1 cup washing soda (also from laundry aisle…NOT baking soda), and 3 cut-up bars of Ivory soap (the big regular sized bars, not the small ones). Then toss into food processor and grind up. Takes 2 tbsp of the mixture for a regular load of laundry, or 3 tbsp for a large or heavily soiled load.
[end nerd moment…lol]
I love nearly all pasta, grain, and rice dishes, so I’m sure I’ll love the couscous as well. π
I get pretty good Mexican food here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but it doesn’t compare to the stuff I ate in Monterrey. Yummmmm.

Jen – thanks- wow, some day I might do that. I have sensitive skin too, but luckily it’s not so bad as to let detergent affect me. I’m lazy π
Mmmm carbs. I never tried Atkins and never had the desire to. You lucky folks down south. Sometimes you find great Mexican at odd spots, but I haven’t found any around me. Places here are “ok” but not great.
I bought at the right time. I was cheaper than with the student discount.
I could eat Mexican food everyday. Real Mexican, Tex-Mex, New Mexican . . . I’m not big on Baja Mexican though. It’s okay but definitely not my fave. My fave in Fort Worth is probably La Familia on Foch Street. Friendly staff, great chile rellenos, my mom loves their margaritas.

I’ve not bought a table because I usually lay on my back and sit the laptop on my stomach. Not when I’m going to be typing a lot, but if I’m just using it to read/watch TV/movie . . .
And yeah, I’ve got an extended battery on mine too. Here’s what it looks like (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2965&review=XPS+M1210+Review) because I’m crap at technical stuff.
Yes, my ice cream is very good unless it gets salt in it.
Liv – hahahahah, no no no. It’s just the Dell student discount – I thought you used that. I call it that b/c Michael Dell is a UT alum/dropout. Huh. Didn’t know they had such sales.
OMG, I’m craving s’mores now and I’ve already gone to the grocery store this week. You’re CRUEL!
If you could please not hotlink images (my s’mores photo), I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
Whoops – I thought that was taken care of – could someone go in and change it? It’s in the gallery “random.”
