Gwen’s review of Turbulent Sea (Drake Sisters, Book 6) by Christine Feehan
Contemporary paranormal romance released Jove by 29 Jul 08
This is my least favorite of Feehan’s series. I love the Ghost Walkers. Am stupidly in love with her Carpathians (yes, I’m in treatment for it). LOVE her Leopards. Drakes? Not so much. But I still read them. Yes. I’m in treatment for that too. Nevertheless, I am happy to announce that I really liked this entry.
Joley Drake is the pop star sister. Her special power is her voice – six of the seven sisters has a different power (wind, telekenisis, etc.), and the youngest, Elle, has all six powers. Joley can make just about anyone do anything with her voice. Anyone, that is, except Ilya Prakenskii, the hero. Ilya also has powers – in fact, he has all of the same powers as all seven of the sisters. And he is one sexy mofo, if you ask me. Plus, he’s the seventh son of the seventh son. Meaning that he and his fated mate are destined to have seven sons. You can imagine how that goes over with the pop star.
Ilya and Joley meet in the last third Drake Sister book, Safe Harbor Oceans of Fire, where Ilya spun some special mojo on Joley’s palm. This mojo makes Joley really yearn for her man, and it allows them to communicate telepathically. All this yearning and togetherness scares the living crap out of Joley – she feels like she’s losing control of her life and herself and she hates it. This paranoia is taken a smidge too far and for a bit too long, leading to a couple of TSTL moments for the heroine, but they’re forgivable if a tad annoying.
What was especially fun about this book was the emotional development and the action. Feehan excels at developing emotional tension and at creating some seriously bad villains. I mean good villains. Uh bad. Well, you know what I mean. Good bad guys. We are not disappointed on either front with Turbulent Sea. Plus, the erotic scenes are HOT. Feehan writes some good steam.
This is a fun Drake Sisters book and while it COULD be read on its own, I think it may be confusing if you’re not at least familiar with one of the other books in the series. I highly recommend it to anyone reading this series, or fans of paranormal romance.
Just one sister to go – Elle’s book, Hidden Current, comes 2009. I’m looking forward to it. Plus, if I know Feehan, we might see six more books featuring Ilya’s brothers. Cool.
Grade: B+
Summary:
The star: Joley Drake was born with a legacy of unexpected magical gifts, but it was the gift of singing that made her an overnight sensation—a rock and roll goddess trapped by fame, fortune, and ambition. Heated by the flush of success, Joley could have any man she wanted. But there’s only man who can give her what she really needs.
The bodyguard: Ilya Prakenskii, cool, inscrutable, dangerously sexy, and working in the shadow of his infamous reputation—that of a secret Russian hit man on the payroll of a notorious mobster. He’s the last man Joley should get close to, yet when her life is threatened on tour she has nowhere left to turn. But in the seductive safe keep of Ilya’s embrace, is Joley really as secure as she imagines?

Other books in this series:
Yesssssssss I want this one and totally confess to the Feehan love. Although in a different way to you Gwen, I had more trouble getting into the Ghostwalker books than these and as for the Carpathians …. I need counselling too.
Come on maillady get here with my book already will ya?
I swear she reads the books before giving them to me!
It would be sooooo many shades of cool if we get to see Ilya’s brothers.
Like you I fell for the Ghostwalkers, and the Leopards, and most of the Carpathians, but I really love the Drakes!
They met in Safe Harbor? I thought they met in Oceans of Fire?
on another note: What’s up with her Leopard Series? Is she EVER going to write those?
Holly – they met in one of them. I spaced on which one, so you’re probably right.
Actually, I think you’re correct. I think Ilya was introduced in OOF, but didn’t meet Joley until SF. Either way, they met before this book. lol
I’m with you Gwen, the Drake Sisters is my least favourite Christine Feehan series as well but I did enjoy Turbulent Sea. I think the books have gotten better as the series has developed and it does make me wonder if Christine Feehan is going to continue this series by introducing Ilya’s brothers
Ilya and Joley definitely met in Oceans of Fire, as Ilya zapped Joley’s palm in the bar scene when Nikitin first appeared in the series.
I stand corrected. Thanks for having my back ladies! 🙂
I’m working my way still through the Ghost Walkers, which I really like, so I have most of this series in the TBR still, only read the first novella that started it off. Since you liked this one a lot and say its fun, will have to start trying to catch up once I get this one.
