Review: The Hollowing by N.D. Hansen-Hill

May 9, 2008

The Hollowing by Hansen-HillShannon C.'s review of The Hollowing by N.D. Hansen-Hill
Sci-Fi novel eBook published by Cerridwen Press 17 Apr 08

I had a hell of a time getting into The Hollowing not because it was a bad book, but because for some reason, probably owing to the fact that Cerridwen Press is an imprint of Ellora's Cave I was expecting a romance. Naturally, I have no problems at all with non-romance books--I'll try and read most things once, but it took me about a quarter of the book to shift my expectations from paranormal romance to something more along the lines of horror-tinged science fiction.

Review: Netherwood by Michele Lang

April 29, 2008

Netherwood by Michele LangGwen's review of Netherwood by Michele Lang
Sci-Fi Romance released by Shomi on 26 Feb 08

This is going to be a short review. I didn't like the book and Alicia did an admirable job summarizing the plot in her earlier review (which you can read here).

This author's site is dismal, by the way. Tells you nothing about the book other than the title and a link to buy it. No blurb. No helpful author notes on the world-building, nada. [finger shaking time] Bad author, shame shame.

Review: In Heat by Leigh Wyndfield

April 23, 2008

In Heat by Leigh WyndfieldShannon C.'s review of In Heat by Leigh Wyndfield
Science Fiction Romance eBook released by Samhain 4 Apr 08

Science fiction romances are some of my favorites in the paranormal romance subgenre of doom. Sometimes they work really well. Sometimes they really miss their mark.

Leigh Wyndfield's In Heat is a nice but flawed edition to the genre. We start out with Jax, our hero, who has a problem. See, it's time for his once-yearly mating heat, and he needs a woman. So he buys a slave for an outrageous sum, intending to use her to slake his sexual hungers and leave her in the morning. This premise leaves my inner feminist, who is a mouthy bitch, stomping around and muttering to herself.

Review: Driven by Eve Kenin

April 2, 2008

Driven by Eve KeninAlicia's review of Driven by Eve Kenin
Sci-Fi/Speculative Romance released by Shomi on 28 Aug 07

Have you ever let a book get pushed off and pushed off? Not for any good reason, you just don't get to it? When you finally read it did you ever really regret not reading it sooner?  Sybil keeps asking me, "Have you read Driven, yet? You're gonna' love it!" Do I have to tell her she was right, again, or can we just keep this between us?

Review: Netherwood by Michele Lang

March 31, 2008

Netherwood by Michele LangAlicia’s review of Netherwood by Michele Lang
SciFi/Speculative Romance released by Shomi on 26 Feb 08

On her site Michele Lang describes Netherwood as "a futuristic Robin Hood story."  It is, but it's way more than that.  Netherwood is Robin Hood with The Matrix and I Robot thrown in and a sort of Aeon Flux feel.

Review: Going Down by Ann Somerville

March 26, 2008

Going Down by Ann SomervilleTeddypig's review of Going Down by Ann Somerville
Gay Science Fiction & Fantasy released by Lulu (self-publishing house) on 27 Jan 08

Ann Somerville obviously loves this world she has created here in Going Down. The scope of world-building is rich and lightly foreign in feel and the characters she populates it with are familiar in some ways and fascinating in others. Paranormal gifts like empathy and telepathy are relatively common place and these gifted people populate the crowded streets in an almost ordinary fashion and their jobs in the Corps reflect a culture that has found a way to benefit from them.

[Ed.: The proceeds from the book are being donated by the author to Doctors Without Borders.]

Review: Grimspace by Ann Aguirre

February 25, 2008

Grimspace by Anne AguirreLoonigrrl's guest review of Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
Sci-Fi romance released by Ace 26 Feb 08

This book was a very pleasant surprise. Ok, it was more than that. It was awesome. Sure, I enjoy sci-fi just as much as the next Star Trek-Star Wars-Firefly/Serenity-Battlestar Galactica fan.  But when it comes to books, I usually choose to read fantasy or romance. In fact, Grimspace is one of the very few science fiction books that I have absolutely loved.

Review: Death By Ploot Ploot by Dara Joy

February 19, 2008

Dara Joy Death By Ploot PlootTeddypig's review of Death by Ploot Ploot by Dara Joy
Sci-Fi erotic romance ebook novella released 2 Feb 08 by the author

First about the cover... Ugh-Gah-Lee!

Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you tried you just could not get the joke? Like when you read a book where you knew you were reading something out of a preexisting series and you probably should have read the first book and that the author is going ahead and making absolutely no attempt to clue you in on the characters or what they are supposed to be doing? Well, I am here to tell you that just freaking sucks. How can anyone care about a story if you are never introduced to the world and the people who inhabit it in the first place?

Review: Twist by Colby Hodge

February 7, 2008

Twist by Colby HodgeAlicia Thomas's ROB review of Twist by Colby Hodge
Urban fantasy/SciFi romance released 29 Jan 08 by Love Spell (Dorchester)

I asked to review Twist because I enjoy SciFi Romance and this looked like an interesting idea. I really enjoyed a similar title from Dorchester, Wired. Before you read further, know that this will definitely be an "out of my box" review as the book contained elements that I don't generally seek out for my own personal enjoyment. Since adult romance readers are probably still feeling out where Shomi will take them, I'll go ahead and tell you what I found. Read more
