REVIEWS: Wolf Unbound by Lauren Dane *and* Standoff by Lauren Dane

May 14, 2008

Sandy MSandy M’s reviews of Wolf Unbound (Cascadia Wolves, Book 4) & Standoff (Cascadia Wolves, Book 5) by Lauren Dane
Contemporary Paranormal Romance eBooks published by Samhain 1 Jan 08 & 4 Mar 08

I’m the typical reader who needs to read a series of books in order. However, reviewing books doesn’t give you that luxury very often. I’ve never read Lauren Dane before and suddenly I had the last two books in her Cascadia Wolves series in hand and once I started reading, I didn’t care one iota I hadn’t read the first three books before beginning these two.

Review: Life on the Move by Megan Reilly

May 8, 2008

Life on the Move by Megan ReillyShannon C.’s review of Life on the Move by Megan Reilly
Contemporary young adult fiction released by Samhain 29 Apr 07

I love it when a book packs the kind of emotional wallop that leaves me sitting in my chair well after I’m done, stunned into speechlessness. When that book is only about 150 pages long, I consider that amazing. A quick word of warning–this is a young adult novel, and it’s not an easy story to read, so people expecting a traditional HEA will be disappointed, but if that doesn’t matter so much to you, this is definitely worth a try.

Review: In Heat by Leigh Wyndfield

April 23, 2008

In Heat by Leigh WyndfieldShannon C.’s review of In Heat by Leigh Wyndfield
Science Fiction Romance eBook released by Samhain 4 Apr 08

Science fiction romances are some of my favorites in the paranormal romance subgenre of doom. Sometimes they work really well. Sometimes they really miss their mark.

Leigh Wyndfield’s In Heat is a nice but flawed edition to the genre. We start out with Jax, our hero, who has a problem. See, it’s time for his once-yearly mating heat, and he needs a woman. So he buys a slave for an outrageous sum, intending to use her to slake his sexual hungers and leave her in the morning. This premise leaves my inner feminist, who is a mouthy bitch, stomping around and muttering to herself.

Review: The Last Man on Earth by Raine Weaver

April 16, 2008

The Last Man on EarthShannon C.’s review of The Last Man on Earth by Raine Weaver
Contemporary Erotic Romance ebook released by Samhain 4 Apr 08

This book is cute. Cute works extremely well for some readers. But this particular reader has only a charred lump of coal where her heart should be, so the cuteness of this story wasn’t so much charming as it simply grated on my last nerve.

Review: Cowgirl Up and Ride (Rough Riders, Book 3) by Lorelei James

April 10, 2008

Lorelei James Cowgirl Up And RideSandy M’s review of Cowgirl Up and Ride (Rough Riders, Book 3) by Lorelei James
Contemporary Western Romance released by Samhain on 18 Mar 08

I’ve read a couple of reviews (including our own Teddypig) of this book lately that criticize the fact that this story looks into the lives of other McKay family members and that detracts from the story of the hero and heroine. I beg to differ with ya’ll. This is a series about the McKay family and when tragedy strikes a family, it affects the entire family. So having parts of each book about that family is certainly fine by me. The few parts of this book that do delve into the other family members’ lives aren’t that many and aren’t that lengthy at all anyhow.

Review: Private Maneuvers by Denise A. Agnew

April 8, 2008

Private Maneuvers by Denise A. AgnewShannonC’s review of Private Maneuvers by Denise A. Agnew
Romantic erotic suspense ebook released by Samhain 1 Apr 08

Private Maneuvers is the third book in Denise A. Agnew’s Hot Zone series. It follows Male Call and Unconditional Surrender although you don’t need to read either of those to understand what’s going on. (And I say this as the type of reader who, when reading series, absolutely has to stick to reading order.)

Unfortunately, the fact that I was able to follow this story without having read the rest of the series is among the few things that did work for me about this book.
