I'm the typical reader who needs to read a series of books in order. However, reviewing books doesn't give you that luxury very often. I've never read Lauren Dane before and suddenly I had the last two books in her Cascadia Wolves series in hand and once I started reading, I didn't care one iota I hadn't read the first three books before beginning these two.

This is a tale about how a boy finds a girl. It's set in modern day. However, it struck me as I was reading it that the story could have been set in any time - the characters and the plot were that universal. There are no paranormal distractions, no deeper mysteries to solve other than how were the hero and heroine going to make things work. A universal tale, really. Well...

I knew going into this book that I wasn't going to like it. After about paragraph two, I had to stop, remove my jaw from the floor, sigh and shake my head. After all, the e-mail I got from Sybil with the review copy of this book said, "It's probably more Laura's taste than yours." Did I listen to Sybil? Of course not. That will teach me! So, naturally, I only had myself to blame for continuing to read.

I have a really hard time with funny books, make it slap stick comedy and I am generally running for the hills. So it is odd that I made it past the first chapter of this book because the opening is a very klutzy heroine at a fabulous party. One who of course has a perfect mother and catches the eye of the most perfect man in the room. I hurt for her, this normally makes me close a book faster than anything and toss it in a ubs bag never to be seen again. Read more

This novel has an interesting pacing. It starts rather slowly, almost disinterestedly, with a prologue. Little by little, chapter by chapter, the pace increases without the reader’s awareness, until one is racing towards a climax that surprises even upon a second reading.

It has been a long time since I stayed up late reading. I've read some decent books lately, enjoyable ones, but nothing worth jeopardizing my precious beauty sleep. And it is always a good sign when I just can't wait to get back to a book. Enchanting the Lady had been on my pile for awhile, waiting for my mood to be right. It was a delightful surprise, one of the most engrossing romances I've read so far this year.

Ann Somerville obviously loves this world she has created here in Going Down. The scope of world-building is rich and lightly foreign in feel and the characters she populates it with are familiar in some ways and fascinating in others. Paranormal gifts like empathy and telepathy are relatively common place and these gifted people populate the crowded streets in an almost ordinary fashion and their jobs in the Corps reflect a culture that has found a way to benefit from them.
