Review: Dark Needs at Night’s Edge by Kresley Cole

May 16, 2008

Book CoverDevon's review of Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole
Paranormal Romance published by Pocket Books 29 Apr 08

I wasn't going to read this book, to be honest. I had read A Hunger Like No Other and enjoyed it, and No Rest for the Wicked and thought it pretty good. But I had never quite gotten around to Wicked Deeds on a Winters Night. And I'm not a big fan of ghost love stories. No body means no sex, no hugs, no kisses. How's an author going to make that HEA work? I tend to view them with deep suspicion. But this book was getting good buzz (see Gwen's review), and it had a crazy hero. I love a tormented hero. Tormented to the point of crazy sounds good. (Let's not think too deep on what that says about me). So I decided to try it. Good thing for me, because this is my favorite read of the year so far.

Review: Scions: Insurrection by Patrice Michelle

May 15, 2008

Book CoverDevon's review of Scions: Insurrection by Patrice Michelle
Paranormal Romance released by Silhouette Nocturne 1 May 08

Insurrection continues the story of three paranormal races spawned from a government experiment, enemies who are bound together by a prophecy. This sequel to Scions: Resurrection focuses on the Lupreda, or werewolves, who were created by vampires to be their prey. Like the first in the trilogy, this was a fast paced, action packed read, I but enjoyed it even more.

REVIEW: The Boy Next Door by Amy Knupp

May 14, 2008

Book CoverDevon's review of The Boy Next Door by Amy Knupp
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Superromance 1 Feb 07

I haven't read a ton of SuperRomance, but I've found that even if I don't love them, they keep my interest, making for a pretty fast read. They are the perfect length for straight up contemporaries: long enough to explore the characters and conflicts, but not so long that the obstacles to the romance seemed contrived merely to drag things out. Just throwing that observation out there, because this particular HSR was very good: full of emotion, difficult issues, and very human characters.

Review: Having Justin’s Baby by Pamela Bauer

May 8, 2008

Having Justin's Baby by Pamela BauerDevon's review of Having Justin's Baby by Pamela Bauer
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin SuperRomance 11 Mar 08

Despite the ridiculous title, I had to read this book as soon as I read the cover blurb, as it combined two of my favorite themes: accidental pregnancy and friends to lovers. Paige takes solace in the arms of long time best friend, Justin, the night her fiancé takes off for Vegas. Uh-oh! They are just barely getting back on their old footing when Paige realizes she's pregnant. Double uh-oh! You know what Harlequin's tagline should be?

Harlequin: Making Bad Decisions Romantic.

Review: Racing the Moon by Michele Hauf

May 4, 2008

Racing the Moon by Michele HaufDevon's review of Racing the Moon by Michele Hauf
Paranormal romance ebook released by Silhouette Nocturne 1 May 08

Racing the Moon is the debut offering from Silhouette Nocturne's new Bites line, which consists of electronically published paranormal short stories. If you enjoy erotic romance novellas from epublishers like Ellora's Cave or Samhain, you will likely enjoy this story. You will certainly know what to expect: lots of mental lusting, an isolated situation, a bit of "getting to know you" banter, and the good old horizontal tango.

Review: Jewel by Beverly Jenkins

April 29, 2008

Jewel by Beverly Jenkins Devon's review of Jewel by Beverly Jenkins
Historical Romance released by Avon 29 Apr 08

Gotta say, I really enjoy a good Americana setting every once in awhile. Small towns where everyone's in each other's business, and no one ever forgets a thing. I'm coming out of historical burnout, and have been on the lookout for unusual settings to help me out of that slump. So when Jewel came up for grabs, I was all over it. A nineteenth century American setting? That's not a Western? Yes! While not a perfect book, Jewel has plenty to interest those who enjoy American historicals or different settings in general.

Review: The Millionaire’s Makeover by Lilian Darcy

April 27, 2008

The Millionaire's MakeoverDevon's review of The Millionaire's Makeover by Lilian Darcy
Contemporary Romance released 1 May 2008 by Silhouette Special Edition

What does the "Makeover" of the title refer to? The makeover of tech exec Ben Radford's grounds by landscape architect Rowena Madison? The makeover of the timid Rowena into a passionate woman, instigated by Ben's attentions? Ben's makeover from ambitious businessman to tender lover? There are multiple possible meanings and none of them quite work for me. Similarly, I found the blurb somewhat misleading. This book differed from my expectations in a good way. The hero and heroine were category archetypes, but with significant differences and depth.

Review: The Baby Plan by Kate Little

April 17, 2008

Book CoverDevon's review of The Baby Plan by Kate Little
Contemporary Romance released by Silhouette Special Edition 1 May 08

Oy vey, it's time I gave in and embraced my love for baby/pregnancy books. I always profess to disdain them, but somehow, some way, they just keep jumping into the TBR pile. As I said in an earlier review, not a big fan of secret babies, but I am a sucker for a failed condom. You read that right. I love those books where two people succumb to (a usually ill-advised) passion, and find themselves having to deal with unexpected consequences. Baby consequences.

Review: Daddy on Call by Judy Duarte

April 14, 2008

Daddy on Call by Judy DuarteDevon's review of Daddy on Call by Judy Duarte
Contemporary Romance released by Silhouette Special Edition 1 Apr 07

Okay, so the title and cover of this book are pretty much the reason so many people scoff at Harlequins. But the blurb called to that part of me that still obssesses over "My So-Called Life", that secretly adores "A Walk to Remember," that can listen to "Bad Reputation" by Freedy Johnston over and over again. I just can't get enough star-crossed, teenage bad boy/good girl love. This book started off as cheesy goodness, but deteriorated with a tired and predictable plot.
