GUEST REVIEW: Harvest of War by Hilary Green
Stevie’s review of Harvest of War (Leonora Trilogy, Book 3) by Hilary Green
Historical Romance published by Severn House 1 Jul 13
I already raved about pretty much anything written by Hilary Green, and then she wrote this series about the conflicts between 1912 and 1918: not just the First World War, but the conflict in the Balkans that led up to it – one of my favourite authors writing one of my favourite eras. So what can you expect from the saga? Women who get involved. Women who travel across dangerous territories by whatever means necessary. Men who may disapprove but who love those women anyway and will generally help rather than force them to sit at home knitting scarves, packing up food parcels and waiting. This series has all that in bucket-loads and the third book is the stand-out volume.
REVIEW: An Inheritance of Shame by Kate Hewitt
LynneC’s review of An Inheritance of Shame by Kate Hewitt
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Presents 23 Jul 13
Back in the sanitized Sicily of the Corettis, we find Angelo, the bastard son, and Lucia, chambermaid, once his lover. This story is a poignant tale of two people who are lost, and find themselves in each other.
Kind of.
REVIEW: A Spy to Die For by Kris DeLake
Veena’s review of A Spy to Die For (Assassins Guild) by Kris De Lake
Futuristic Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 01 Jul 13
I have a fascination for stories set in futuristic worlds and space travel. So I grab any books that I can find in this genre, particularly since good futuristic romances are hard to find. This particular book combines the excitement of a spy thriller along with the futuristic elements in a very Star Trek kind of way. It reminds me of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith in a “galaxy far, far away”. read more…
REVIEW: The Millionaire Cowboy’s Secert by Karen Widdon
Dinca’s review of The Millionaire Cowboy’s Secret by Karen Whiddon
Contemporary Romance by Harlequin Romantic Suspense 7 May 13
This a good story line, but it has a lot left unfinished. I feel it could have been a really enjoyable read, but I kept waiting for more. I see a lot of promise in Ms. Whiddon’s writing, however, and will read her again.
REVIEW: The Marshal’s Destiny by C.H. Admirand
Dinca’s review of The Marshal’s Destiny (Irish Western Series, Book 1) by C.H. Admirand
Western Romance published by Amazon Digital Services 7 Apr 13
I find this a very nice story with a lot of action complicated by a bit of confusion. It’s interesting the way it all plays out. Never a dull moment. Funny with just the right amount of sexual tension for a delightful jaunt through the Colorado countryside. Ms. Admirand has captured my attention and I will be looking for more from her.
REVIEW: Throne of Oak by Dana Marie Bell
Veena’s review of Throne of Oak (Maggie’s Grove, Book 2) by Dana Marie Bell
Paranormal Romance published by Carina Press 10 Jun 13
I was at a lose end when I came across this book, and, having enjoyed other books by the author, decided to pick it up. I have often read books out of order in a series, but, unfortunately, this is one of those books which is so closely intertwined with the earlier stories that I would definitely recommend reading these in order. Despite that challenge, I still enjoyed the book and find the theme of a shapeshifting dragon vampire in love with a forest dryad very different and refreshing. read more…
REVIEW: True Love by Jude Deveraux
Veena’s review of True Love (Nantucket Brides Trilogy, Book 1) by Jude Deveraux
Contemporary Romance published by Ballantine Books 09 Jul 13
I love this book. It’s vintage Jude Deveraux with a blending of supernatural elements involving ghosts and reincarnation and reintroducing us to the Montgomery-Taggarts, as she launches a new family branch on Nantucket Island. Jared Montgomery Kingsley inherits his Grand Aunt Addy’s house, which he shares with his grandfather, the resident ghost. He is deeply resentful that he has to share the house with Alix per the terms of his Aunt Addy’s will.
REVIEW: I Dream of Danger by Lisa Marie Rice
Veena’s review of I Dream of Dange (Ghost Ops, Book 2) by Lisa Marie Rice
Paranormal Romance published by Avon Red 02 Jul 13
We met Nick Ross in the previous book in the story arc and it was clear that he grieving for his lost love. Nick, like many of the author’s male protagonists, has had a rough start in life but is rescued by a fairy princess by the name of Elle Thomason. Circumstances in the form of an overprotective father and an overdeveloped sense of honor prevent the relationship between the two from developing into a love story from the get-go. Does this story line sound familiar to fans of the author? It should because it’s been used before.
REVIEW: If the Shoe Fits by Megan Mulry
Sandy M’s review of If the Shoe Fits (Royal Series, Book 2) by Megan Mulry
Contemporary Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 2 Jul 13
I’ve been telling myself for a couple of months now that I want to try a new author or two in the stack of books sitting here, so Megan Mulry is the first of those. I think I made a really good choice.
REVIEW: The Man Behind The Pinstripes by Melissa McClone
Wendy the Super Librarian‘s review of The Man Behind The Pinstripes by Melissa McClone
Contemporary romance published by Harlequin Romance 04 Jun 13
When I tell readers that they can often find innovative and interesting heroines in category romance, I am sometimes met with eye-rolling and scoffing. While certainly category romance has been known to reinforce traditional female stereotypes and play up Rescue Fantasy storylines, that doesn’t mean that is all there is to the format. Case in point, this latest book by Melissa McClone. On the surface the author appears to give readers a fairly standard romance for the Harlequin Romance universe, but dig a little deeper? And the heroine is totally kick-ass.
