REVIEW: So It Goes by Jennifer Probst

Veena’s review of So It Goes (Twist of Fate, Book 2) by Jennifer Probst
Contemporary Romance published by Montlake 13 Sep 22

When I first discovered Ms. Probst, I fell in love with her writing style and haven’t missed any of her books. Malia and Palmer’s chemistry is off the charts, and I admire Palmer for courting Malia in his own inimitable fashion, given that he’s a big client for her advertising business. Malia, despite the chemistry, is very resistant and it strikes a bit of a jarring note in how long and how strongly she protests, despite feeling the same chemistry. read more…

REVIEW: Merrily Ever After by Cathy Bramley

Product ImageStevie‘s review of Merrily Ever After by Cathy Bramley
Contemporary Holiday Romance published by Orion 13 Oct 22

I like stories about people discovering unexpected relatives close by, because I’ve witnessed it happen in my own family. On the other hand, dementia – particularly involving parents – also hits home at the moment, in a less good way, so I was a little uncertain about this book at first. Emily lives in the small Derbyshire town of Wetherley and has recently started a temporary job as a school secretary after quitting a higher pressure job in order to take care of her father, who has dementia and lives in nearby Bakewell. Meanwhile, Merry also lives in Wetherley and has a thriving candle business in the town. Merry was brought up by her mother, who died while Merry was still at school, and has no real recollection of her father. She has a good relationship with her boyfriend’s family, including her former art teacher, but still longs to know more about her own.

REVIEW: The Mad Girls of New York by Maya Rodale

Product ImageStevie‘s review of The Mad Girls of New York (Nellie Bly, Book 1) by Maya Rodale
Historical Mystery published by Berkley 26 Apr 22

I was only faintly aware of the name Nellie Bly when I picked up this book, but I’m always fascinated to read about trailblazers, be they real, fictional, or a combination of the two. Nellie arrives in New York in 1887, having already worked as a journalist in Pittsburgh, and also travelled in Mexico. She finds the New York newspaper editors to be hostile, however, with none of them wanting a woman writing for them unless it’s for the ladies’ pages – one of the career options Nellie left Pittsburgh to avoid. Nellie’s luck starts to change when she meets a close-knit group of female journalists, who work on a combination of society reporting for the ladies’ pages and ‘stunt journalism’ – undercover work to expose injustices perpetrated by big institutions on vulnerable women.

REVIEW: Sweetwater and the Witch by Jayne Castle

Veena’s review of Sweetwater and The Witch (Harmony, Book 15) by Jayne Castle
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 20 Sep 22

This series set in Harmony, with its charming mix of old-fashioned values and circumstances driven by the world, is totally charming. Ravenna and Ethan, with their pen-loving dust bunny Harriet, make an absolutely wonderful addition along with the other characters in this universe.
