This is something that has been a long time coming I think. And the writing has sort of been on the wall. If the move of the Promise series to Berkley wasn’t a big enough hint, the fact that her next book had no release date and seem to be in limbo was sort of a really big clue.
Still it leaves me with a WOW feeling, more for the epublisher than the author. Because with all the EC bashing, rumors and such running a muck… it just shocks me to hear that one of their most vocal Pro-EC authors, will no longer be writing for them.
As of now Sarah McCarty is no longer writing for Ellora’s Cave. And there are none coming from her in the near future. It was a very civil parting of the ways and the door remains open. At least from what I understand there is no wrong or evil shadows lurking here. It was just an agreement that couldn’t be reached. I have to say like Sarah McCarty‘s books or not she is one hell of a professional.
But from the looks of her schedule with HQN, SPICE, Berkley Sensation, and Berkley Heat I can’t see her finding the time or even the need to go back to EC. I guess at this point we can just hope her rights goes back to her at some point so her current work with them can be published. I really did want to read the rest.
Big loss for EC and to the fans waiting for Zach’s Obsession AND Promises Redeem. I misread π the Berkley series will start with the Reverend’s. But I can’t see it being a bad thing at all for Sarah. Either way I look forward to seeing what she has coming up and wish her well.
I don’t know Sarah, and haven’t read any of her books (I just got the Promises series in the TBR), but most of the time these things boil down to a “business decision.” Publishing is a business – and sometimes terms just can’t be met, even when it leaves readers scratching their heads (like when HQ and Nora couldn’t come to terms, that one still flummoxes me mainly because you think HQ would have given her the moon. Just saying.)
On a related note – I’m obscenely excited about Sarah’s Spice series. And HQN? What’s she got planned for them?
I had not heard that, very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
This really doesn’t make sense to me. Why not publish the McCarty books? Even if the author has moved on, it seems that you could still make money off her now.
I am thinking for whatever reason they couldn’t reach an agreement. Of course I am not sure what is what I would guess they own the character but don’t have a signed ‘contract’.
I am all sad now though cuz I love the promise series. And looks like we will lose one :(.
I think EC is basically a starting point for most authors. Yes they are allowed more freedom with certain things and sex scenes that may let authors shine that can’t usually. I congratulate Mccarty for finally moving on to brighter waters.
E-books are still new and still do not have as much exposure and money like better well known publishers.
If I was writing for e-books and a publisher like Avon, Kensington and the like came to me, I would go to them.
It was a contract thing… a compromise couldn’t be made. That’s what I know. I posted on my blog about it. π
lol anne… I know that part. Even though it is a yahoo group anyone with the want can join and has 1,000+ members I emailed Sarah before I posted.
Since I can’t link to it, I always ask first. I am overly anal like that… as to WHY though….
“contract thing” can mean lots and lots now can’t it *g*
Yes, yes it can Sybil. “Contract thing” could mean a multitude of things. And, I know you’re totally professional and I had no doubt you checked with Sarah about things. I normally lurk, but I just had to say hey! I heard about that too. π
Good grief, I must check my Yahoo mail more often!! I would have thought EC would have tried harder to keep her, it’s not like a writer like her comes along everyday.
Oh well, their loss, Berkley’s gain.
I wonder how many more of their big authors will part company with them after this.
You know it’ll happen, dontcha?
EEK Sorry anna I didn’t mean to sound bitchy. Honestly I think it is pretty much open season for a members only group that doesn’t do approvals.
I asked only because I am overly anal… really far far from professional. Do post me too whenever you want π
Karen I felt the same way! I would have thought they would have been licking her arse. Well they say things happen in threes… should we place bets?
I so did not think you were bitchy. No problemo. π
Feel free to post me as well, whenever you want. LOL
Over on the Romantic Times messageboard, Sarah mentioned that Zach mostly likely will appear in another story under a different name.
“The good news is, while these exact story lines have to go on terminal hold, my imagination does not and these personality types can be reincarnated into new worlds so while Zach in the story line of Zach’s Obsession will not exist, his personality can come back in another form.”

So all is not lost.
Have I gone into moderation? My previous comment doesn’t show.
It’s definitely a shame, if only because so many of us wanted to read those books. But we can only hope that someday Sarah will get the rights beack to those characters. However, she has only been moving up in the world of publishing, so the move to the NY world is definitle a good one for her, and I can’t wait to read what’s coming out in her new line, as well as the Rev’s book π
Ooh, I think that’s great news for Sarah. I love her books. Although I clearly wasn’t paying attention, because I thought Promises Prevail was her last book… At any rate, it’s the one I have. π
