Hello there!  I’m Bree, one half of the paranormal romance writing duo of Moira Rogers, and I’m on a wild and crazy blog tour talking about dangerous men and the women who love them. And I’m not just talking about their heroines—I mean all the women who love them, including those of us who read & write about them!  That’s why I’m here with an excerpt from Keeping Company With Bloodhounds, a book that gives all the dirty details about those dangerous warriors. (Even if it only exists in the fictional world of the Bloodhounds.)

Most of the books in the Bloodhounds series take place far away from the comforts and civilization of the large cities on the east coast.  In this world, almost everything west of the Rocky Mountains (and no little bit of land to the east, as well) is controlled by vampires.  And since Bloodhounds were created to fight vampires, that’s where many of them end up.

Writing about the frontier is fun.  We love the chance to have a weird west setting, with gunslinging vampire hunters and vampire outlaws.  At their core, these books are paranormal westerns.  Our heroines have to be the sort of independent ladies who would thrive in such a setting.  It’s certainly not for everyone…

CHAPTER ELEVEN – BLOODHOUNDS ON THE BORDER

Most of you, my beloved readers, reside east of the Mississippi River, and in large communities where one may be expected to need some guidance in order to widen one’s social circle.  The reason for this is simple: in smaller towns, everyone knows everyone else, and you’d likely not need my assistance in meeting a bloodhound if there was one to be found.

The same can be said of those ladies living in the rough-and-tumble West.  If you make your home in one of the settlements or fortifications in the territories bordering the Deadlands, chances are you not only know your resident bloodhound, but owe him your very life–literally.  In such situations, where tensions and passions already run high, any attraction is likely to blossom without my aid.

The hounds tasked with patrolling the border tend to be coarser, less cultivated types.  Lest that sound like a judgment, let me assure you that these qualities have, in fact, been highly prized by many fine ladies of my acquaintance.  To that end, I’ve sometimes been asked my thoughts on relocation.

If you are an independent, strong-willed young woman possessed of ample finances and an adventuring spirit, there are border towns which are relatively safe and would offer an enviable quality of life should you choose to make a home there.  But let me suggest you exercise caution and prudence.  Many a lady has undertaken a move of this sort only to find herself heartbroken, lonely, and desperate.

In other words, dear reader, in this respect…let your conscience–and good sense–be your guide.
