I like to write series. One of the main reasons is that I get to write a large cast of characters who all intersect with one another at some point.
Because, really, the best way to understand a character is through the eyes of the people in their lives. Their family—intentional as well as biological—friends, co-workers, etc, knows that character in a way the reader doesn’t yet.
The heart of this book, of the entire series is family. Whether it’s an intentional family, such as the one Natalie has created with her close circle of friends, or the one you’re born with, like the wild, crazy and intensely loyal Hurley family, it’s what both Paddy and Natalie value.
