According to the latest poll by the Romantic Novelists’ Association, it’s Richard Armitage (and yes, I did vote for him!) Here’s the press release:
Romantic Novelists vote Richard Armitage
Sexiest Thing On Two Legs
British actor Richard Armitage has leapt from last year’s 4th place to this year topping the ratings in the Romantic Novelists’ Association 2009 Valentine’s poll, to take the title of Sexiest Thing on Two Legs, beating top Hollywood stars to the number one spot.
Johnny Depp, who topped last year’s poll, was pushed firmly into second place, with Hugh Jackman and George Clooney mere also-rans. “Richard Armitage took 20% of the vote, more than double the count of any other male on the list,” said the RNA pollster. “He was a clear winner from the off.”
The RNA is not alone in admiration of the actor, as numerous online Richard Armitage fan sites will testify. The ardency began with North and South, grew by leaps and bounds with the leather-clad baddie in Robin Hood, and shows no sign of diminishing as Spooks takes to the airwaves.
‘It’s a coup for Britain,’ said one starstruck writer, ‘not just for sexy Richard.’
According to romantic novelists, the sexiest male celebrities of 2009 are:
Just for Syb:
I guess I’m really out of the loop because I’ve never heard of five of these men including Armitage!
I must be too busy reading! 😉
I am so surprised that Gerard Butler is all the way down at #10.
And, sorry, just don’t see the attraction of Armitage. I mean, he should probably be on the list, but #1? (sorrry gals)
And Depp is a bit androgynous for my taste.
When I saw this post I so thought you did it but I saw the lack of pics and then knew it couldn’t have been you….
well and lack of nakkkiiddd pics
HEY! I like depp! but Rickman? Don’t get that one.
I like your list (especially Armitage and Depp- ahhh…), but I don’t know who #5 and #8 are. And (don’t shoot me) I don’t think George Clooney is anything special. I know everyone goes nuts over him, but I just don’t see it. He’s attractive, but he wouldn’t make my personal top 20 list.
Richard is so eviiil as Guy in Robin Hood, but oh so yummy. Especially the way things ended with season 2. He is going to be so tortured in season 3.
Ah
As soon as I saw “Baddie in Robin Hood”, I realized where I’d seen him that made an impression on me.
Although I dislike the series –sorry I just can’t deal with trading on my childhood heroes — whenever we tuned to BBCAmerica and catch the ads, I always go, “Whoa! Who’s the gorgeous bad guy?”
Nice to see some movement on your list.
David Tennant is the only one that doesn’t turn me on. Sorry. I loved him as the Doctor, but not in a light my fire way.
Happy to see Pierce is still there. He’s been a fave of mine for more years than I care to remember!
(First saw him in an American mini-series The Manions of America. He had a bit more heft which I think suits him better and the most glorious head of hair.)
Hugh still does it for me and although Johnny Depp also doesn’t make my heart go pitty pat, I love his acting. I agree on the androgynous aspect
Daniel Craig is fast becoming a favorite.
Alan Rickman, for some reason I do get a little clutch. I think it’s his voice.
Sean Bean…ooh another long time favorite.
George Clooney I can take or leave. He is classically handsome, but for whatever reason, he just doesn’t make me swoon. I see someone else feels the same way.
Gerard Butler accent yes, otherwise. eh.
But a nice diversity

Clooney – one of my faves. But not always the looks. More the intelligence and the fact that he could laugh you into bed.
Alan Rickman – he was the first Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons on the stage. For those of us who saw it, he went straight to the top of the list. There’s a glimpse of him in the role here:
And, of course, Truly, Madly, Deeply.
Richard Armitage?

Sigh.
Number 1???
Well, yea-aa – who else could it possibly be?? And for me there is no need for the rest of list – though maybe Johnny Depp….
Georganna: All I can say is North and South – BBC version. Watch it and you will see why he’s numero uno!!! Or else there is the BBC series Robin Hood – look for the evil, yet oh so sexy Guy of Gisbourne. Or the latest season of Spooks for the spy who was held and tortured by the Russians for years.
I added some pics. And a special one just for Sybil.
I totally agree with the #1 pick. Armitage is yummy. I loved him in North and South and Spooks. I didn’t watch Robin Hood. I’m not so keen on Depp, though. My top three would be Armitage, Butler and Craig. I always look at pics of George Clooney and think he is good looking and wonder why doesn’t he do anything for me. Weird that.
Works for me! gorgeous pics!
Armitage is hot, but not #1 hot (IMO). As for the rest..eh. Not impressed. Craig I like more after seeing him as Bond, but not enough for him to make my list. Depp, Brosnan and Rickman are just icky (sorry!) to me. Yuck.
I like Armitage in North and South, but he’s not really me type. Depp is much closer to it; I like the pretty boys.
I’m varied in feeling about the guys, but I’m surprised David Tennant made the list. He’s an excellent Doctor and while the geek cred is hot, he’s still a little weedy.
I’d put Gerard first, and Richard second….I actually had a whole list going in my head until I scrolled down and got distracted by the penis picture.
It is rather distracting, isn’t it. ;-D
Where is Christian Bale? I needed a cold shower after listening to the dance remix of his @#$% rant. 🙂
And why all these, well, not exactly elderly, but somewhat middle-aged men? Where are the young turks? The pretty jailbaits? 😛
Armitage doesn’t make my heart go pitter-patter, either. The rest of you, have at him, lol.
Clive Owen? Jason Statham? I have yet to see either of those guys in a less-than-attractive moment 🙂
Alan Rickman ? Oh yes! Put him straight #1 and forget about the rest. How about a nude pic of HIM??? With Snape’s wig on..yes please!
Sherry, I love androgynous, it really shakes my tree, but I fear I’m in a minority. Pretty boys, no, once the sex is over they tend to be pretty boring. So Johnny Depp is there as the nearest. I had and have the major hots for David Bowie, but people go yuk. Hey, even Mick Jagger wore a dress once.
You have to see Armitage in action. He was so romantic in North and South, doing the Mr. Darcy-buttoned-up thing, and then he was all broody in Spooks, with the edge of violence that epitomised so many edgy heroes. Moreover, he replaced the also gorgeous Rupert Penry-Jones, and they had one fight scene together that was – well, wait until you get it in the States and you’ll see.
All these men have something more about them, something as well as raw sex appeal. Intelligence, humour, that spark of individuality that shows in their eyes. Dunno really, the annual poll is a pretty large one and these are the ones who came out on top.
Oh, all very drool worthy. Except Clooney. He’s not my cup of tea, but Yes, Yes, Yes on all the other ones.
Lynne,
LOL, see my love of pretty boys come from having never had one, so that I don’t have to know they are boring after teh sexxoring.
My current pretty-boy is Rupert Friend, who is great in Boy in Striped Pajamas, and is going to make Prince Albert sexy–a task I’d have thought impossible–in The Young Victoria. And will be a naughty young thing in Cheri. Drool!
Richard is my #1 choice, too, so yay! Haven’t yet seen the appeal of Daniel Craig, but then I haven’t seen him in a role yet. I don’t watch Dr. Who, so that’s another one I wouldn’t know about. Also, while I adore Alan Rickman as an actor, he’s never struck me as sexy (ducking for cover now). But the rest are all hot as hell to me!
OH COME ON HOW COULD YOU PUT GEORGE CLOONEY IN THERE HE’S OLD AND DISGUSTING AND THE NUMBER 1 SPOT IS SO UGLY (for the record i AM a girl) I SAY DAVID TENNANT, DANIEL CRAIG, OR ALAN RICKMAN. IF YOU’RE GONNA RANK THESE PEEPS DO IT RIGHT
It was a vote, not an individual choice, so really, you’re dissing the votes of quite a few women. Richard Armitage – watch “North and South.” Sexiness isn’t just looks.
