Gwen’s review of Enchanted directed by Kevin Lima
Live-action/animated movie released 21 Nov 07 by Andalasia Productions
I saw this film this weekend with my 8-year old daughter. We went on a complete whim. We just left her father at the airport so he could return to England where he lives, and the curtain-climber was sad. So we showed up at the theater with no clear plan and no idea what was showing. Boy did we get lucky. Enchanted was worth every penny of the matinee-priced tickets and then some. Even if I had had to pay for the full-priced tickets, I would have been happy. It was that good.
What I think I liked the most about the film was it didn’t take itself too seriously. It was not openly a farce, but neither did it try too hard. Plus it had the most wonderful HEA(s) I’ve seen in a long while.
Amy Adams was AMAZING as Giselle. I loved her character. Susan Sarandon was a wonderful villain. Timothy Spall (Nathaniel) played a very good henchman – actually a bit sad. Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden were both very good heroes. Pip, the chipmunk, was very funny in New York.
The romance was believable and so nicely done, I was smiling like a besotted idiot at the end. In addition to being completely suitable for kids, it would make a terrific date night movie – I’d be shocked if you’re not feeling romantic at the end.
I totally recommend this movie, whether or not you have kids. You will not regret the entertainment dollars spent.
Grade: A+
Blurb:
In an animated fairy tale world, a young girl meets and falls in love with the handsome prince of her dreams. News of this romance upsets the prince’s mother, the evil queen, who uses her black magic to send the girl hurtling out of the animated world into the one place in the universe where there is no true love: modern day Manhattan. The now-real girl has to survive in New York City and find her way home again to her true love.
Watch the trailer.
I’ve said this before, but what the heck, I’ll say it again. My husband LOVED this movie. We took my ‘tween (11) on Thanksgiving for the late showing. While she was unsure whether or not she should admit to liking it, my husband (who never ever ever talks during the movie) leaned over, half way through, and says, “I love this”. This from the Sci/Fi Action War movie king!
Awesome.
It was the most fun I’ve had at the theater in a long, long while.
I am hoping my tween cousin (age 8) will go see Enchanted with me this weekend. Looks so cute! 🙂
I took my kiddies on Saturday and absolutely loved it. We spent the car ride the way home spontaneously singing our conversation and being very silly.
I’m so excited to see this. I took Hbomb and the Destroyer to see Bee Movie over the weekend, and it was eh, but they were really well behaved. So I think we’re going to try it.
Or else I’ll go by myself.
I really want to see this movie!!
I’m planning on taking my grandkids to see it!
By the way what does HEA mean? Thanks ahead of time.
My sisters and I plan to see this movie. We can’t wait! 🙂
Darla – Happily Ever After, darling! Happily ever after. Something we always strive for in Romancelandia.
I loved this movie! There was a group of us that went last weekend and we all enjoyed it ~~ even the guys. I’d recommend it.
I wasn’t too sure on going. I wanted to see something blow up. But the Golden Compass isn’t out yet so we went to this one.
I loved it. Hubby loved it. This movie works on every level. Great rec.
Thank you Gwen…My mind went blank and I couldn’t think of it.
YAY! I’ve been wanting to see this! Now I just have to trick one of my friends into going to see it with me…… 😉
I took two teen boys and my husband. Athough they didn’t gush, no one complained that it wasn’t Hitman.
But the house cleaning scene was the funniest thing I’ve seen in weeks. Since then, I’ve been trying to sing for results in my kitchen, and am still getting nowhere.
