Nikki’s review of Promises Linger by Sarah McCarty
Historical Western Erotic Romance published 31 07 04 by Ellora’s Cave
Elizabeth is alone in the world. Her father raised her after her mother’s death but he was never much of a father, anyway. He raised her rough and she greets the world the best she can. I was impressed with McCarty’s portrayal of Elizabeth. You see her trying her best to tough out the harsh realities of life while she feels terrified and alone. McCarty walked the fine line between a character with inner conflict and a character who contradicts herself and I think she did a magnificent job.
Asa will live in my drams for a long time to come. He’s strong but he’s gentle and patient beyond what any real man I’ve ever known could manage. You see his human frailty but he never lets it hurt Elizabeth (sigh)… Ok, he’s too good to be true but he’s a HERO! He’s not over the top enough to pull me out of the story by being unbelievable. I know better than to compare a ‘real live man’ to him.
Asa is just perfect. (Sigh, again…)
It is an EC and the love scenes are edgy enough that you may want to skip if you don’t go for erotica. But the story is a whole lot more than sex. I laughed and I cried. I totally bought these two falling in love. I even bought the total naivety of Elizabeth because of the way she was raised.
I had wanted Promises Linger by Sarah McCarty because another ebook I read (a contemporary) was pretty good erotica. I never expected the wonderful, sweet love story I got. This “American West” historical is worth buying and y’all gotta’ know this is good because I usually can’t get into Westerns.
Grade: A-
Check out Gwen’s review of Sarah McCarty’s fabulous new historical western erotic romance, Caine’s Reckoning.
This is my This was my first Sarah McCarty. I loved Asa and Elizabeth, and I especially loved that the erotica was integral to the plot. And yes, Asa is a wonderful hero who is definitely too good to be true, although I didn’t really care, since I adored him.
I bought this a few weeks ago, but have been putting off reading it because while it grabbed me in the bookstore, it hasn’t grabbed me at home to go ahead and read it. I believe your review has kick-started me, though. I’ll give it a try when all the family leaves on Friday and I’m alone in my house once more.
I just finished this last week and I loved it! Elly and Asa were wonderful and I really liked the side characters as well (especially Millicent and Cougar). I’m in the middle of Promises Keep right now and hope to have it finished up by the weekend.
I think we should make Sarah a crown of some sort. Hmmmm…..
This was my first McCarty book and still remains my favorite with Caine’s Reckoning coming in a close second. Love, love, LOVE the McCarty *G*
Nikki- Thank you so much for such a wonderful review! And if I tell you that Asa is based on my husband’s personality, will you believe? *G* For example, not only does my husband not mind my leaving him with 6 dogs 8 cats and two teenagers to care for when I go away to write, when I get back, the house is spotless, flowers are on the table a box of chocolates beneath them with a note that says welcome home. He also has my favorite dinner prepared and a big hug and a kiss and a glass of wine. He’s always been my hero and to hear Asa speak is to hear him speak, so who better than him to be the first hero in my book? Even if no one believes men like him exist, the truth is, they do.
Sarah, admittedly a very pampered wife
Yup, Asa is great! This book made me happy reading. I love it when that happenes. I almost hated to finish it because I wanted it to go on and on.
Now I’m going to be thinking of Asa all night, lol
