[note: I thought of calling this: I hate you, youtube but figured no one would get it. Like not even the five or six people who normally get the stupid things I title my posts]
I noticed some crying around romanceland over the lack of moderation on reader blogs. I had a serious what the fuck moment when I read it. We are suppose to be moderating? Huh? What?
I created this blog to talk about romance novels, publishing, the industry and reviews of them. Why in the world would I ask you for your view and then tell you how you HAD to think or delete it when it didn’t meet what I thought was right or correct.
I try to never delete posts (or blogs). In fact I don’t think I have ever deleted or moderated a post on this blog, unless it was spam. I can’t say I will never because I do host Author days. I would never delete a post asking a ‘difficult question’ of an author, I just leave it up to the author to answer or not.
Cynical bitch that I am, I am sure at some point in time I will have someone post something that will need the delete button. As it is the author’s day, I work with them to find where that line is drawn. Lucky for me so far it just hasn’t been an issue – yeah I hope it stays that way. ::crosses fingers::
I want to know what other readers think. I want to know what authors think. I will agree with some of it and disagree with some of it. Not agreeing with a person isn’t the same as disliking a person. At the same time, allowing someone the right to voice their opinion isn’t saying you agree. I wish more people understood this and I wish I had a 1,000,000.00 and don’t see either of those things happening any time soon.
If you are looking for a playground that is sanitized for your protection, I would say romanceland isn’t for you. For the rest of you, stick around tis fun here. And just for the hell of it here are some really amusing southpark quotes.
“If you are looking for a playground that is sanitized for your protection, I would say romanceland isn’t for you.”
I’d actually replace “romanceland” with “blogland”. Most bloggers blog for fun/interest/themselves and have nothing to lose. As a blog reader, I moderate myself – if I don’t like where comments are headed, I leave (or lurk but tape my arm to the back of my chair!). I suppose I could comment back if I really wanted to, but I’d have to be prepared for what happens to my fragile ego. 🙂 If one day I find that I haven’t been enjoying reading a particular blog for a while, I unsubscribe and that’s it. Simple. Done. Blogs are there for me to visit. They’re not foisted on me so I won’t complain if they’re talking about things I don’t like.
Lack of moderation? I missed something. But I’d say it’s up to the owner of any blog to moderate or not as they see fit. If you don’t like how the owner of a blog runs it, you, um, don’t have to go there.
Okay, I’m curious, who’s wondering why reader blogs aren’t moderated? Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of a blog? I mean, if I wanted a moderated environment, I would post on a message board or to a group list.
The only time I find the unmoderated nature of blogs irritating is when fan girls arrive — to attack or to gush. I check out a reader blog that was posting an interview with JR Ward a couple of weeks ago. The Cellies flooded the comments. There may have been interesting questions and answers, but I couldn’t be bothered to wade through 100+ comments, many of them reading “WARDen, we LUV you For Evah!”, to read them.
FWIW, the only things I’ve ever deleted from my blog are spam posted as comments. Of course, I’m pretty middle of the road.
JMC, I think she’s talking about Ferfelabat’s blogging etiquette post. She linked to it the other day.
I thought that FLB was just feeling sorry for herself? I didn’t realise she actually meant what she wrote. *g*
I could go on to say something about people who insist on commenting a trillion times, (regardless of the fact that the other posters aren’t taking a blind bit of notice) and totally take over your blog, but I’ll refrain. *g*
Sybil – LOL – what do you Do to these people to get them so p’d off at you?
Unless I’m missing something, I can’t see why the latest one has it in for you. Colour me confused.
What I didn’t get was how FLB wasn’t going to name anyone and then in the comments your blog and one other is listed plain as day – it even says in her post she’ll edit out the names of blogs in comments. I tried to figure out if it was a trackback but I couldn’t tell.
Like JMC, I’m pretty much middle of the road except that I swear much more than she does and my grammar can make people weep 😉
My ass was seriously chapped over a certain book I had waited anxiously for but if someone came on and said, ‘hey, I loved it’ that’s all good. I want other people to like the books they are reading and I certainly don’t think less of them.
I just know how I feel and hell, I’m going to say it with swear words and all!!
Then again, the blogs I visit are more or less like mine in that we’re really only talking about our day to day lives and the romance books we’ve read lately. If someone thinks I’m a pain in the ass I’m figuring they won’t be back and if I cross someone who I think needs to up their meds then I’m may stick around with my popcorn to watch the bonfire but other than that, I won’t be hanging out on a regular basis.
Could you imagine opening up your post to discover a comment:
Dear (your blog name), we are the blog etiquette police and we have found that you have used way too many swear words in your review of ‘This Book Is A Steaming Piece of Shit’. We order you to cease and desist.
Damn, we should get Jane over at Dear Author to create a special statue that we can place proudly on our blogs. “I’ve been hit by the Etiquette Police!”
CindyS
Hey I told Lisa Kleypas if she said Fuck while on my blog I should get a button. *g*
so I am all for cussing
I think it was on kate’s blog that Ferfelabat (yo cindy you know her name is cindy right? hee or at least the one book she published was) was wanting to do some mad etiquette policing on karen and monica was all a twitter that jane wasn’t mod’ing posts that she didn’t agree with. Of course I think the SHE was monica not Jane. But whatever. I was just surprised to see anyone, much less two people who make a rule of going to places they feel unwanted and starting heated discussions were upset about lack of moderation.
Ferfelabat will sit there and argue with herself if no one else will and no that wasn’t a trackback.
Ferfelabat will sit there and argue with herself if no one else will
Ahhh, you noticed that too? *g*
Has anyone paid attention to how lazy of a blogger I am. I can barely type the names of the authors correctly or the name of the book let alone be moved to mod comments. bah.
It’s all I can do to visit the sites I like and occasionally write a post for my blog let alone have the time to write posts/comments about another site’s moderator or lack there of. Don’t people have jobs, families, books to read, movies to watch, a freakin’ life?
I think FLB was feeling a little wounded and was after some link lovin’. She ought to have posted something about authors sending shit-stirring e-mails, then sitting back and hiding their hands whilst the shit hits the fan.
Oh my GAWD! Sybil, you have touched on a topic that is one of my hot buttons. I want to ask these prissy etiquette martinets, “Aren’t there other (better) things to worry about?” I hate censorship on blogs or boards when what is being censored is indemic to what we’re commenting about! The authors we’re commenting about can use it, but we can’t? C’mon! (f-bomb!)
I get seriously irate when I’m told what kind of language I can and can’t use when I try, quite hard, to be an “adult” about using swear words. (f-bombers) The reason I’ll post comments on Sybil’s blog and not someone else’s is because she actually lets me use that judgement! It’s such a breath of fresh air! I’m treated like an adult! (f-bomb, again)
It has only happened to me twice elsewhere in board/blogland, but I’ve had posts edited or removed for language/content – and I didn’t even use the f-bomb! I felt like I had just had my hand slapped by the teacher! I’m (mumbleover40mumble) years old, for pity’s sake! The authors who’s books I’m commenting on certainly do!
(multiple f-bombs and assorted other colorful colloquialisms ensues)
LOL I can’t say shit about other people’s cussing so have at it hon.
KarenS I was wondering when that was gonna come up *g*
Honestly I think that is the super cool thing about authors agreeing to come here. And also why I am never shocked if I get turned down. It has happened… once.
To me, we talk and talk and talk about authors… and why they do the things they do – if we are given the chance – why the fuck not just ASK them?
There are ways to ask honest thoughtful questions without beind rude. And more than a few of us can and do, do it. I love it. And I adore the authors that come on ready, willing and wanting to talk the talk.
