REVIEW: Dearly Beloved by Mary Jo Putney

Book CoverVeena’s review of Dearly Beloved by Mary Jo Putney
Historical Romance published by Zebra Books 01 Jul 19

Ms. Putney has been a long-time favorite author.  This story is quite thought provoking and left me with very mixed feelings. The first paragraph is extremely dark and almost distasteful and seems an aberration as the story picks up in a very different place.  Of course, she cleverly ties the present to that episode as the story unfolds. read more…

REVIEW: A Highlander Walks into a Bar by Laura Trentham

Book CoverSandy M’s review of A Highlander Walks into a Bar (Highland Games, Book 1) by Laura Trentham
Contemporary Romance published by St. Martin’s Paperbacks 30 Jul 19

This is only my second book by Ms. Trentham, and I freely admit the title drew me in. With her first book, An Indecent Invitation, which is an historical romance, I had a problem with the heroine, as referenced in my review. While Isabel – Izzy as her friends and family call her – has reason to be suspicious and doubtful in the beginning, her attitude lasts a bit too long for me.

REVIEW: Lessons in Chasing the Wild Goose by Charlie Cochrane

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Lessons in Chasing the Wild Goose (Cambridge Fellows Mysteries, Book 12.6) by Charlie Cochrane
Gay Historical Mystery published by The Right Chair Press 19 Mar 18

It’s been a while since I read a new Cambridge Fellows mystery, and I’ve managed to find myself behind by two novellas, a situation I’m now rectifying in the midst of all my other reading and reviewing. This book takes us to the autumn of 1922, and our heroes are enjoying the last few days of peace before their students return. As always, the year is reflected in both how the lads have matured since their earliest adventures and how the world around them has progressed. Inevitably Orlando is trying to resist the changes, while Jonty is enthusiastically embracing every new piece of technology he can get his hands on. Just as predictably, they are both of the opinion that what they need right now is a new puzzle to take their minds off the upcoming term. Fortunately, one is just about to be brought to their attention… read more…

REVIEW REVISIT: Dark Light by Jayne Castle

Book CoverGwen’s review of Dark Light (Ghost Hunters, Book 5) by Jayne Castle
Sci-fi romance released by Jove 26 Aug 08
Original review posted 7 Sep 08

I’ve read three of the Ghost Hunters books now – this one, Silver Master (#4), and Ghost Hunter (#3). I’d have to say that my opinion of all three is consistent – good, slightly above average reads in the sci-fi romance sub-genre. I like them quite a bit better than I do the Arcane Society books, but considering how much I don’t like those, that may not be a compliment. read more…

REVIEW: Wound Tight by Lorelei James

Book CoverSandy M’s review of Wound Tight (Blacktop Cowboys, Book 10.5/Crossover Rough Riders) by Lorelei James
Erotic Contemporary Western Romance novella published by Evil Eye Concepts 11 Sep 18

I’ve been in a cowboy mood lately, and Lorelei James is one of the best when it comes to creating sexy, sensitive, and alpha cowboys. Justin Donohue is a rodeo world champion at a crossroads of sorts in his life when he meets Callie. She may be young, but she’s full of sass, just the perfect foil for the washed-up cowboy – at least that’s what she believes he is.

REVIEW: Dark Storm by Karen Harper

Book CoverVeena’s review of Dark Storm (South Shores, Book 6) by Karen Harper
Romantic Suspense published by MIRA 28 May 19

Each book in this series is a stand alone, but for maximum enjoyment I recommend reading the series in order. Claire is enjoying her summer with her daughter Jilly, when her sister Darcy disappears, leaving behind no clues except that some exotic butterflies and larvae are missing from the butterfly farm where Darcy works. Was there foul play involved? read more…

REVIEW: 59 Memory Lane by Celia Anderson

Book CoverStevie‘s review of 59 Memory Lane by Celia Anderson
Contemporary Women’s Fiction published by HarperCollins 25 Jul 19

Mysteries unravelled and family secrets revealed through the examination of long-forgotten letters is one of my favourite tropes, especially when the discoveries take place in a small, close-knit community. So this debut had my attention almost before I’d finished reading the admittedly short blurb. The cover stuck in my mind too, with its treasure trove of a memory box peeping out from under a stamped and addressed envelope. And treasure troves of memories are exactly what we get here, thanks to May Rosevere’s rather unusual gift, which is what she believes has enabled her to live to one hundred and ten. As the story begins, she is hoping her gift will enable her to reach the very special age – in her mind, at least – of one hundred and eleven. read more…

REVIEW: Wolf Rain by Nalini Singh

Book CoverSandy M’s review of Wolf Rain (Psy-Changeling Trinity, Book 3) by Nalini Singh
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 4 Jun 19

I think like a lot of romance readers out there, I love Nalini Singh’s work because she’s one of the few who can keep a series, after numerous books, fresh and alive. Her talent and imagination are so many levels above other authors. Since our Veena has already given a great overview of the story in her review, what more is there to be said?

REVIEW: Racing Hearts by L.M. Connolly

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Racing Hearts (Hearts on Fire, Book 1) by L.M. Connolly
Contemporary Romance published by Tule Publishing 06 May 19

I’m a great fan of Lynne Connolly’s historical romances. However, I’ve read far fewer of her contemporaries, whether written under that name, or – as in this case – under the name L.M. Connolly. The situation obviously needed rectified by means of this new series, especially since it started off with a novel involving a motor racing heroine. In fact, Georgia Trent isn’t just a racing driver: she’s been involved in all aspects of her father’s team since she was old enough to wield a spanner. And she’s not afraid to take risks on the track, either – think Susie Wolff, Claire Williams, and Jamie Chadwick all rolled into one. Meanwhile, our hero, Ronan Miller, while he has driven cars competitively, is far better known as the owner of an American high-end sports car manufacturer. Less commonly known is the fact that he is the son of the Italian car mogul, who is considering sponsoring the Trents’ racing team.
