REVIEW: Singapore Sapphire by A.M. Stuart

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Singapore Sapphire (Harriet Gordon Mystery, Book 1) by A.M. Stuart
Historical Mystery published by Berkley 06 Aug 19

I’m a great fan of detective stories set in the first half of the twentieth century, but don’t spot nearly enough new ones set before the First World War, much less set in countries with which I am mostly unfamiliar. So, seeing this novel heralding a new series fitting all those criteria caused great excitement. Harriet Gordon was widowed in India, losing both her husband and son to a typhus epidemic, then took up the suffragette cause after returning to England. Traumatised by her experience of being force fed while on hunger strike in prison, and keen to avoid bringing further scandal on her family after her case was reported in the papers, she now lives with her brother in Singapore, carrying out unpaid administrative work for the school in which he is headmaster and advertising her services as a shorthand typist to other expats in order to earn some actual money. It’s the latter job that leads Harriet into all sorts of trouble when she stumbles over the body of her new employer.

REVIEW: A Mackenzie Clan Christmas

Book CoverSandy M’s review of A Mackenzie Clan Christmas (A Highland Pleasures Novella Anthology) by Jennifer Ashley
Historical Romance published by Berkley 29 Oct 19

I’m trying to get back into historical romance, and thankfully Jennifer Ashley is leading the way. I’ve enjoyed this series so much over the years, so it’s nice to celebrate the Christmas holiday with them again, especially when the stories revolve mostly around Ian. He was the one to introduce us to the Mackenzie family, so it’s perfect when he’s front and center all these years later.

REVIEW: Sergeant’s Christmas Siege by Megan Crane

Book CoverVeena’s review of Sergeant’s Christmas Siege (Alaska Force, Book 3) by Megan Crane
Romantic Suspense published by Berkley 29 Oct 19

A by-the-book Alaskan state trooper and a maverick ex-special forces thrill seeker – not exactly a match made in heaven. Or is it? Ms. Crane delivers a story that checks all my boxes with its wonderful blend of thrilling suspense, passion, and strong emotions.   Grizzly Harbor, Alaska and its Alaska Force residents are to be a great destination this winter.

REVIEW REVISIT: All Tied Up by Cathryn Fox

Book CoverLauraJ’s review of All Tied Up (Pleasure Inn, Book 1) by Cathryn Fox
Contemporary Erotic Romance novella released by Samhain Publishing 19 May 09
reissued by Cathryn Fox 17 Dec 17
Original Review posted 17 Jun 09

How does she do it? Cathryn Fox is able to create stories in a short amount of space and you still feel like you have read a regular full-length novel. I have heard authors say that it’s much harder for them to write a novella than a novel because they have so much they want to say or they need to say to convey the entire story. In all the novellas I have read by Ms. Fox, I have never been left feeling that I have missed any part of the story. read more…

REVIEW: Rule of Law by Karin Tabke

Book CoverSandy M’s review of Rule of Law (Chimera, Book 1) by Karin Tabke
Contemporary Romance published by Karin Tabke LLC 15 Oct 19

It’s been a while since I’ve read Karin Tabke. So with this new series she’s started, after taking a bit of time off from writing, I thought it might be a good time to get reacquainted with her work. This is a pretty dark romance, both hero and heroine with pasts that now lead them in their damaged lives, but it’s the heroine who brings the story way down and it never seems to be able to recover from her.

REVIEW: Leopard’s Wrath by Christine Feehan

Book CoverVeena’s review of Leopard’s Wrath (Leopard, Book 12) by Christine Feehan
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 05 Nov 19

Mitya is the product of a brutal upbringing in the Russian lairs, where the male leopards destroy possible mates to sustain the brutality that makes them who they are. Ania is brought up in the bosom of a loving family, given every opportunity to express her individuality, to think and act for herself.  From their first meeting, Mitya acts uncharacteristically when he ignores his bodyguards and his prime operative in indulging in the women who calms his leopard.  Yet, when push comes to shove, he’s a very dominant male leopard who can’t fight his nature in controlling his wayward mate, some of which is not entirely pleasant to read. read more…

REVIEW: Breathe by Cari Hunter

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Breathe by Cari Hunter
Contemporary Lesbian Romance published by Bold Strokes Books 10 Sep 19

Various of Cari Hunter’s novels feature protagonists who work for the emergency services, and this latest book is no exception, pairing paramedic Jemima Pardon with police officer Rosie Jones. The two initially encounter each other when attending an incident in which a prospective bridegroom’s stag night has ended with him stuck in a precarious and highly embarrassing situation. Our heroines’ improvised solution to the problem was certainly ingenious, even if the finale to the rescue managed to strengthen Jemima’s belief that she brings bad luck to anyone unfortunate enough to work with her. Although she likes Rosie a lot from the outset, she’s very wary about getting involved and further jinxing both their situations. Of course, it’s not long before they find themselves working together once again, and this time the situation is far more sombre.

REVIEW: Origin in Death by J.D. Robb

Book CoverSandy M’s review of Origin in Death (In Death, Book 21) by J.D. Robb
Futuristic Fantasy Romance published Brilliance Audio 20 May 08

I read the first ten or so books in this series years ago, then just got away from it because there’s too many books to read! In 2020 this series will now have fifty-one books, so it’s a bit daunting to even think of getting started again. So when I came across a lone audiobook, I figured why not. I’m glad I did. This is the first time I’ve listened to any book in the series, and while the narrator did irritate me at times, I still enjoyed the whole thing.
