REVIEW: The Devil in the Saddle by Julia London

Book CoverSandy M’s review of The Devil in the Saddle (Princes of Texas, Book 2) by Julia London
Contemporary Romance published by Berkley 29 Oct 19

I’ve hesitated reading this second book in the Princes of Texas series because the first book was just so-so for me – which surprised me because I’ve always enjoyed Julia London’s books. So I was skittish all this time. But I learned my lesson not to feel that way  in the future. Hallie Prince is a breath of fresh air, and I enjoyed this book from the beginning.

REVIEW: The Winemaker’s Wife by Kristin Harmel

Book CoverStevie‘s review of The Winemaker’s Wife by Kristin Harmel
Historical Fiction published by Gallery Books 13 Aug 19

Kristin Harmel is a new author for me, but I’m a great fan of stories set in two eras, with the link being members of the families involved, both past and present. I also enjoy seeing protagonists figure out how lessons their relatives learned in previous generations can also instruct them all as to their next steps following an upheaval. In this instance, Liv Kent is trying to move on from the sudden breakdown of her marriage, as well as from the previous disappointment of several unsuccessful rounds of IVF, when her wealthy and eccentric grandmother Edith breezes back into her life, announcing that they need to take a flight from New York to Paris, for reasons that will shortly be revealed. Having nowhere else to go, and being financially dependent on her grandmother due to the wording of her pre-nuptial agreement, Liv reluctantly agrees to the plan.

REVIEW: The Vanishing by Jayne Ann Krentz

Book CoverVeena’s review of The Vanishing (Fogg Lake, Book 1) by Jayne Ann Krentz
Paranormal Romantic Suspense published by Berkley  07 Jan 20

This book is vintage Jayne Ann Krentz. It brings together the elements from each of her series under her different pseudonyms to create this masterpiece that combines psychic elements with modern murder and suspense. Romance is a nice thread in the story, but, like in all her books, it’s a flavor that brings out more in the story than the story itself. read more…

REVIEW: Nice Day for a White Wedding by Georgia Le Carre

Book CoverSandy M’s review of Nice Day for a White Wedding by Georgia Le Carre
Contemporary Romance published by Georgia Le Carre 30 Oct 19

Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy, it seems. I’ve been looking for new authors to read lately, so when I came across this book, the title just grabbed me. Even like the cover. So I didn’t bother with the blurb, just started reading. Maybe I can get away with ignoring the blurb when it comes to favorite authors, but I’ve learned my lesson with authors I’ve not read before. The hard way.

REVIEW: Lady Takes the Case by Eliza Casey

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Lady Takes the Case (Manor Cat Mystery, Book 1) by Eliza Casey
Historical Mystery published by Berkley 26 Nov 19

I have a great fondness for stories set immediately prior to the First World War, with all the ongoing and upcoming upheaval that the setting involves. If there’s a mystery at the heart of the story, so much the better. Having said all that, I also like a story that has a proper feel for the times and the people, and an acknowledgement that these aren’t just modern people inhabiting period costumes. A proper sense of place is also high on my list of requirements. This story started off so well, with a suitably cinematic prologue. Sadly things went rapidly downhill from there…

This series does a great job of marrying the psychic with the spine-chilling thrill of a good mystery.  North Chastain is losing the ability to see the full spectrum of the night that make him a great hunter, but he has one last hunt he needs to complete and this one is personal. In Book 5, Sebastian and Clementine have chemistry coming out their ears and everywhere else. I love this couple and enjoyed the seeing the characters from the other stories in the series as well. I looked forward to their turn. It was crazy and hilarious at the same time.

I think a lot of us, at one time or another in our lives, would really like to get away to Whitaker Island.
