REVIEW: Devil in Disguise by Cynthia Eden

Book CoverSammy’s review of Devil in Disguise (Bad Things, Book 1) by Cynthia Eden
Paranormal Romance published by Cynthia Eden 28 Jun 16

This book has been lingering on my huge TBR pile. I am trying to read older books mixed in with newer releases. Things are going fine. When I was putting this review together, I noticed that this book is listed for free. I think paranormal romance readers will actually really like this one. I also need to confess that I have never read a Cynthia Eden book and I am happy to report that this book won’t be my last. I really loved this first book in the series and I am looking forward to slowly reading the next seven books.

Review: Buried Lies by Kaylea Cross

Book CoverSammy’s review of Buried Lies (Crimson Point, Book 2) by Kaylea Cross
Romantic Suspense published by Kaylea Cross Inc. 27 Nov 18

After reading Book 1, Fractured Honor, I immediately read this book. Wow! I was blown away. This book takes all the things I loved from the first book and takes it to the next level. Things took a dark turn, and to say this was an edge-of-your-seat read would be an understatement. Romantic Suspense is one of my favorite sub-genres and it’s not often you will find a 50/50 ratio of suspense to romance, I think Kaylea Cross is fantastic at balancing the two. Poppy, Noah, and the rest of the cast are back and it’s one hell of a ride. I suggest you buckle your seat belts and break out the Kleenex, because this book will give you chills, break your heart, rejoice over Poppy and Noah’s hard-fought love for each other, and the bad guy getting his just desserts.

REVIEW: 99 Nights in Logar by Jamil Jan Kochai

Book CoverStevie‘s review of 99 Nights in Logar by Jamil Jan Kochai
Afghan-American Literary Fiction published by Viking 22 Jan 19

I love unreliable or conflicting narrators and I’m a great fan of stories within stories. As I’m also trying to read stories by a more diverse range of authors and set in a wider range of geographical locations, this book seemed an obvious pick for me when I was offered a review copy. The narrator of the main story is twelve year old Afghan-American Marwand, who returns to his parents’ home in Logar six years after his previous visit. During his stay, he meets with relatives, neighbours and others, all of whom have stories to tell about their lives, their families, and the legends embedded into the landscape.

REVIEW: Dark Alpha’s Awakening by Donna Grant

Book CoverVeena’s review of Dark Alpha’s Awakening (Reapers, Book 7) by Donna Grant
Romantic Fantasy published by Swerve 05 Feb 19

In the last few Reaper books, Donna Grant has been inevitably drawing us into the life and love of death of the leader of the Reapers. In this book we get to learn the back story of a beautiful woman known as Erith and how she became Death and created the reapers to become the conscience of the fae.  This is definitely not the book to pick up as the first book in the series, since readers might be lost without the sequence of the earlier books, though this is undoubtedly one of the most exciting books in the series.

REVIEW: One Tough Cowboy by Lora Leigh & Veronica Chadwick

Book CoverSammy’s review of One Tough Cowboy by Lora Leigh & Veronica Chadwick
Contemporary Erotic Romance published by Macmillan  29 Jan 19

I was so excited to read this first book in a NEW series! Ha. This is not a new book or a new series. This book was previously released as Moving Violations (Law and Disorder, Book 1) through Ellora’s Cave. I figured this out right after reading the first sex scene. It read like a Lora Leigh book, yet it was also kinda dated. Which lead me to Google. It was when I Googled Veronica Chadwick that I came across a book I had read way back when. The reason I wasn’t sure was that these characters are Hunter and Samantha. When I found the original book, they were known as Jackson and Becca. Now there were rewrites to bring it into 2019, and while some things were changed, other things, like the unnecessary rape scene at the end, was not handled right and, man, did that piss me off. It read like rape fantasy 101. Not only was this book not new, but now I had the misfortune of reading a gratuitous rape that wasn’t even dealt with on the page. Add in some southern accents when the “new book” is supposed to take place in some small town in CALIFORNIA.   Fucking horrible.

REVIEW: Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts

Book CoverSandy M’s review of Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts
Contemporary Romance published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons 12 Apr 11

I picked up this hardcover at my local Friends of the Library book sale, and I’m so very happy I did. I knew i wouldn’t be disappointed because, hey, it’s Nora Roberts. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed her romantic suspense over the last several years, and while I had no doubt this story from 2011 would be good, I held judgment because her works eight years later are her best ever. But my doubts were waylaid with the very first page.

REVIEW: Second In Command by VK Powell

Book Cover Stevie‘s review of Second In Command (Fairview Station, Book 2) by VK Powell
Contemporary Lesbian Romance published by Bold Strokes Books 11 Dec 18

I love the family at the centre of the Fairview Station series, and their various careers in and around law enforcement and other public service professions. This time the focus turns to Jazz, the adopted member of the Carlyle family and Lieutenant to her Police Captain older sister. Jazz’s time in the care system has led to her being very concerned about other at-risk and fostered children, and that concern has led to her only professional reprimand to date. When she comes across a runaway girl while on duty, Jazz can’t resist getting involved, even though she’s once again risking her chances of progression in the force by interfering.

REVIEW: Vengeance Road by Christine Feehan

Book CoverSammy’s review of Vengeance Road (Torpedo Ink, Book 2) by Christine Feehan
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 29 Jan 19]

I feel like you find out pretty quickly what this book is going to be about two chapters in. The two tropes moving this book are not my favorite. I guess if anyone would get me to read these, it would be Christine Feehan. I can’t really review this book without disclosing the tropes. If you want to read this book without knowing, now’s the time to do so. Otherwise, I am going to talk about the highs and lows of the dreaded tropes. This book was a solid second book into this series and I truly look forward to reading each and every member of this complicated motorcycle club/family. It’s the characters who drive these books- their emotional scars, the physical ones, their huge hearts, the way they love, the way they have each others’ backs. It’s definitely about their HEAs, but it’s also about love of family.
