REVIEW: Driftwood Bay by Irene Hannon

Book CoverVeena’s review of Driftwood Bay (Hope Harbor, Book 5) by Irene Hannon
Contemporary Romance published by Revell 02 Apr 19

This has been an adventuresome month for me. I’ve come out of my rut by experimenting with new authors and new voices. Ms. Hannon and Driftwood Bay have been a very pleasant surprise in my journey, and I hope you will find the same if you pick this book up and read it. Clearly this is part of a series, but I had no trouble at all jumping into the story without reading the earlier books in the series.

REVIEW: The True Queen by Zen Cho

Book Cover Stevie‘s review of The True Queen (Sorcerer Royal, Book 2) by Zen Cho
Historical Fantasy published by Ace 12 Mar 19

I greatly enjoyed Zen Cho’s first Sorcerer Royal book and have been impatiently awaiting the next in the series. Although I was a little surprised that this new story opened not in England, but on a foreign shore, and featured completely new characters, all the elements soon fell into place as we learned how these people were connected to the British magicians and magiciennes, as well as to the world of Fairy – the Unseen Realm as our new friends would have it.

REVIEW: At the Pleasure of the President by Shayla Black & Lexi Blake

Book CoverSandy M’s review of At the Pleasure of the President (Perfect Gentlemen, Book 5) by Shayla Black & Lexi Blake
Contemporary Romance published by Black Oak Books 9 Apr 19

When I chose this book to review – all because I like the title – I had no idea it was the fifth and final book in the Perfect Gentlemen series. Huge kudos to the authors for making this story seamless with all the characters involved. I had no idea other stories had come before, and all those characters didn’t bother me at all – something that usually does grate on me a bit. But everything is handled just right in this book, which makes me want to start at the very beginning. I plan to do that soon.

REVIEW: Highland Crown by May McGoldrick

Book CoverVeena’s review of Highland Crown (Royal Highlander, Book 1) by May McGoldrick
Historical Romance published by St. Martin’s Books 30 Apr 19

May McGoldrick has done such a great job with the research so that it’s difficult to separate fact from fiction. Isabella Drummond is a beautiful woman, a physician dragged against her will into rebelling against the Scots and the British. Fleeing from her enemies, it seems like she lands right into a hornet’s nest? Or does it?

REVIEW: Rachel’s Pudding Pantry by Caroline Roberts

Book CoverStevie‘s review of Rachel’s Pudding Pantry by Caroline Roberts
Contemporary Women’s Fiction published by Harper Impulse 18 Apr 19

I’m always happy to find new romance or women’s fiction novels that centre around food businesses, especially when we’re promised recipes to go with some of the offerings described in the story. Since I also know a fair bit about sheep farming, and have written about it once or twice in my time, this book looked like it might be an excellent introduction to a new-to-me UK author. I was also very taken by the idea of a farm and associated bakery business run and staffed by several generations of women.

REVIEW REVISIT: Dark of Night by Suzanne Brockmann

Book CoverC2 (C-Squared)‘s review of Dark of Night (Troubleshooters, Book 14) by Suzanne Brockmann
Romantic Suspense Hardcover published by Ballantine 27 Jan 09
Original review posted 5 Feb 2009

Anyone who has ever visited my personal blog knows I’m a Suzanne Brockmann fan. I’m not a crazy stalker fan grrl or anything – *innocent look* – I’m just enthusiastic. I like all the interwoven stories and the whole deep point of view thing. And I say it’s impressive that all the characters are so real and clearly drawn that it is often easy for the reader to know, without her telling us, who is speaking. No cookie-cutter characters to be found here!  read more…

REVIEW: In Her Sights by Katie Ruggle

Book CoverVeena’s review of In Her Sights (Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters, Book 1) by Katie Ruggle
Romantic Suspense published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 26 Mar 19

I’m going through a phase right now where a lot of my favorite go-to authors are not writing at all or writing fewer novels than they used to. Reluctantly I’ve been exploring out of my comfort zone and finding new authors to enjoy and become faithful to.  In that light, I recently picked up this book from new-to-me author Katie Ruggle to see if she will become one of my go-to authors. The verdict…

REVIEW: No Way Out by Cara Hunter

Book Cover Stevie‘s review of No Way Out (DI Fawley, Book 3) by Cara Hunter
Contemporary Police Procedural published by Penguin 22 Mar 19

Three books in, I’m already very fond of DI Adam Fawley and his team. I’m also a great fan of the way different storytelling styles are brought together to move the plot forward, as well as chapters that either get right inside Fawley’s head or follow one or more of the others around at a slight remove, we also get extracts from online and print news sources and transcripts of interviews and video footage. So far, the main factor linking the cases and the characters’ background plots has been children, those directly affected by crime and those within the team’s families – including Fawley’s deceased son and the problems within his marriage resulting from the unexpected death of a much longed-for child. This third book follows that theme as two youngsters – apparently left home alone in the Christmas holidays – fall victim to a serious fire that soon transpires to have been started deliberately.
